Chapter 176
Having just lived through Rosie’s life story–from her early years to the complexities of her adulthood–my head was pounding like a drum, and Ava’s sobbing felt like nails on a chalkboard. I sat up slowly, cradling my head in my hands, and gently wiped the tears from Ava’s cheeks with a soft smile. “Mom, I’m alright.”
In Rosie’s memories, I saw the sad tale of a woman who spent her life stuck in the grip of a man. She and I were cut from the same cloth, both trapped in the past, unable to step forward. But while I had found my way out, she was still stuck in the mud. Rosie’s tragic end was partly due to her own timid nature. It was this very timidity that gave power to the other woman and her family, leading Rosie down her sorrowful path. Of course, blaming the victim wasn’t right. The real villains were the ones who hurt her!
Ava suddenly pulled me into a tight embrace. “Amelia, you’re all I have left. If I lost you too, how would I ever get by?”
She was the epitome of the gentle, kind–hearted woman, never showing a hint of harshness. Yet, it seems like misfortune always picks on the gentle souls. I hugged her back, giving her a reassuring pat. “Don’t worry, Mom.
rom now on, I’ll take good care of myself. No more stressing you out.”
I promised to live a life filled with happiness, for both me and Rosie. Ava watched me closely, and seeing I was alright, she finally relaxed. The doctor had confirmed that except for a cut on my hand that needed some time to heal, I was fine. Still worried I might faint again, she insisted I stay in the hospital a little longer.
Not wanting to argue, I agreed with a smile. Resting my head on her lap, I let myself be a little playful. “As long as I’m with you, Mom, I don’t mind where we are. Can I sleep in your room tonight?”
Ava wiped her tears, a gentle smile tugging at her lips as she stroked my hair. “You silly child, all grown up yet still such a cuddler.”
She gazed at me warmly. “Sweetheart, it’s been ages since you’ve been this close to me.”
“From now on, I’ll be all snuggles and affection, as long as you don’t get tired of me.”
In that moment, I let go of all the baggage from my past, feeling like a carefree child once more, safe in my mom’s arms. Ava was over the moon and made sure I ate well herself. Having been out cold for nearly a day, was starving. I didn’t hold back and savored every bite.
I couldn’t fathom why someone as lovely and warm as Ava, with such a supportive family, was passed over by Jared, who clearly had no sense. He turned his back on such a wonderful wife, chasing after someone with no class–a choice that was truly revolting. Rosie had always been timid around her dad, trying hard to win his affection. Jared constantly belittled her, claiming she wasn’t as good as others outside the family. Yet, he never realized that from the day Rosie was born, he never really saw her for who she was. Now that Rosie was gone, I wouldn’t let that pathetic excuse for a father and his mistress have the last laugh!
I played the part of the dutiful daughter in front of Mom, putting her at ease. She went home to fetch some essentials, and I took the chance to slip out of the hospital room.
Grandma! I had to share the good news with her. Tonight, everyone would hear rumors of my supposed demise, surely letting their guard down around Grandma. Her room was just upstairs, but sneaking in without showing my hand was tricky. Ever since the orchid incident, Ava had been on high alert, not letting anyone near Grandma. It had been days since I last saw her, and she must be worried sick.
After mulling it over, I decided to head upstairs. This time, I didn’t bother hiding my face. As soon as I reached the ward’s door, Ava’s eyes were on me in an instant.
&
Amanda!”
“Are you talking to me?” I asked, feigning ignorance.
