“Are you okay? You look like you’ve just seen a ghost.” Lila asked as I walked back to the table, still trying to calm my racing
heart.
I couldn’t explain what had just happened immediately. I felt disoriented and uncomfortable and I didn’t feel as safe as I did just ten minutes ago. I had felt so comfortable here, it was like I was without any worry in the world but now, all of a sudden that had been taken away from me.
“Jess, answer me come on what’s happening, why do you keep looking everywhere?” Lila asked panic in her words.
“I saw a woman,” I whispered to her, trying my hardest to keep the panic from my voice.
“You saw a woman? So?” She responded, frowning.
“She knows me. She knows who I am.”
“Jess, come on. It’s not a big deal if one or two people recognize you. You’ve been to several packs, alongside your father so you know that shouldn’t be a problem. As long as you don’t make a big deal about it, I’m pretty sure no one will make a big deal about it.” Lila said and I shook my head rapidly.
“It was different Lila. She said something about the wolf’s child wandering away from his protection. She said it in a mean way, you know with some kind of bad intent. I’m not crazy I know what I heard Lila.” I whisper yelled, trying to get my emotions under control.
“It’s okay Jess. I believe you. Let’s get our food to go and for now, just be careful. Most people in this pack are actually crazy so this might just be one of them crazy folks hoping to have some fun with you. For now, just be careful. I’ll find a way to bring this up with Arthur without hinting at the important parts and see if he can do something about these people, okay?” Lila said, reaching out towards me to take my hands in hers.
I wasn’t sure what Arthur would be able to do about it without knowing the real situation but I trusted Lila and it made me feel better that she wasn’t just dismissing me. Our food arrived and Lila asked the waiter, whose name turned out to be Zack, to put it in a to–go bag, once we paid for it, we made our way out of the mall.
“This has been such a productive day, did Stephan tell you what time he would be here?” Lila asked as we got into the house.
“Nope, but it still feels pretty early so I’m just going to take a nap for now,” I said, making my way to my room.
I sorted through most of the clothes and put them where I wanted them to go. To be honest, most of it was good and I was impressed with Lila’s sense of fashion and style. I wouldn’t really pick out most of the clothes if I had been shopping by myself but now that I had them, I could really see myself enjoying most of them.
Once I was done sorting through it all, I moved to my bed and settled in it, closing my eyes and falling asleep before my head could hit the pillow.
I woke up with a start. I couldn’t tell immediately but I knew something had woken me up. I blinked trying to fight the sleep that still threatened to pull me under. My room was dark and that made it even easier to place my head back on the pillow and shut my eyes, I was just starting to drift off again when my phone on the nightstand dinged with a text.
“In case you’re wondering, yes that’s Stephan and that should be the fourth text he has left you with,” Lila said from beside me and I screamed, rolling over and landing with a thud on the other side of the bed.
The lights were flickered on and I looked to see Lila sitting up in my bed with a mischievous glint dancing in her eyes. Goddess, this woman would be the death of me.
