Jack’s nervousness grew more palpable, and a faint sheen of cold sweat dampened his palms. He stood there waiting, but no one came to the door.
Panic stirred in his chest, and without thinking, he reached out to push the door. To his dismay, it was firmly locked, refusing to budge.
Nearby, a small blackboard caught his attention.
On it were the words: “Closed today.”
At first, he had assumed the sign meant Freya was expecting him—that she had marked the inn as closed to other guests, leaving it just for their reunion.
But now, the meaning was painfully clear: she had no intention of seeing him.
At that moment, it dawned on him.
Freya had played him.
She had never planned to meet with him. This was her way of rejecting him.
Every detail screamed at him, loud and unforgiving: “Sorry, I’m not going to forgive you.”
Jack stared at the inn in disbelief.
His mind reeled back to the past, to the moments they had dreamed of together.
Back then, they had talked about opening a seaside inn someday. They’d imagined feeling the sea breeze against their skin, wrapped in each other’s arms, living a life of simple happiness.
He’d known how much she loved the idea, so he had gone ahead and bought several coastal inns back home, just to surprise her.
From time to time, he would take her there, and she’d always laugh with joy, delighted by each new place. Her sweet words of praise had warmed his heart, filling him with pride and happiness.
But when had it all started to fall apart?
When was the last time they’d gone somewhere together?
The answer was bitter and clear.
Ever since Lily had entered the picture, his time with Freya had dwindled.
Those inns they once visited together had been completely forgotten.
He had broken so many promises.
Guilt clawed at Jack’s heart, growing heavier with every passing second.
He despised the man he used to be.
He had worked so hard to win Freya over, knowing full well that she lacked a sense of security. He had been aware of her fear that they might end up like her parents. And yet, he had let it all slip away.
In the past, he had resisted so many temptations without wavering. So why couldn’t he hold on to that resolve?
