“Do you… know where Addie went? When did she leave?” Jack asked, his voice hoarse as he licked his dry lips.
The staff exchanged uneasy glances before one of them replied, “Sir, Mrs. Sterling left early this morning with her suitcase. We don’t know where she went.”
Left? Where could she have gone?
Jack’s mind was blank, flooded with a wave of panic as he struggled to think. Her parents had long since remarried and built separate families, so there was no chance she’d go to them.
Clinging to a shred of hope, he began calling her friends.
“Hello? This is Jack Sterling. Is Addie with you?”
“What? Are you serious? Why would Addie be here?”
Again and again, the same conversation repeated itself.
He even called his friends, but no one had any idea where Freya might be.
Despair crashed over him in relentless waves.
It felt like he was being dragged back to a time when she wasn’t in his life, a time of emptiness and chaos. She was his greatest love, the very center of his being, as vital to him as the flesh over his heart.
And now, it felt as though that flesh was being ripped away, leaving nothing but raw, agonizing pain.
“Addie, stop playing games with me! Please, I need to see you!” he roared, his voice cracking, his eyes bloodshot. He was like a lion mourning the loss of its mate, consumed by grief and rage.
Then, as if struck by a sudden thought, he bolted upstairs.
In his study, the gift box Freya had left for him sat waiting. With trembling hands, he carefully peeled off the sticky note that read, “Open in two weeks,” and reached for the box.
Clutching the gift box like it was his last lifeline, Jack’s expression was filled with desperate hope.
“Maybe Addie left me a message… maybe she wants me to find her,” he murmured, his voice thick with desperation.
His trembling hands tore through the layers of wrapping until he finally opened the box.
Inside was a divorce agreement, signed with Freya’s name.
“No… no, this can’t be real… this isn’t possible,” Jack whispered, his voice cracking as he stared at the papers in disbelief.
He gripped the divorce papers tightly, sinking to a chair as if the weight of what he was seeing had knocked the air out of him.
