The South Regent had seen through Jeremy’s intentions and even knew about Stephen. However, instead of showing anger, he openly let Jeremy go and even warned him about the Spencers.
He also mentioned a name–Ethan Rivers,
Jeremy looked at the driver and asked, “Mister, do you know who Ethan Rivers is?”
“Lord Rivers? Of course,” the driver replied in a language Jeremy understood. “Everyone knows Lord Rivers.”
“Why? Isn’t he from Riveria?”
The driver laughed. “He brought peace to Riveria. It’s chaos personified here, so everyone is hoping that he’ll return and save them.”
“I see…” Jeremy thought about it, then asked, “But Riveria isn’t really that peaceful now.‘
“Yeah, that’s because Lord Rivers has been missing for some time.”
Jeremy was shocked. “Missing? What happened?
“We don’t know the details.” The driver was also helpless.
Jeremy had no further questions. The next day, he returned to Riveria and received a call from Stephen as soon as he arrived.
“Why did you go missing for two days?”
Jeremy told the truth. “I was kidnapped and taken abroad.”
“What?” Stephen was shocked. “The South Regent captured you? Are you still abroad?”
“No, they just sent me back.” Only then did Jeremy realize that the person he had spoken to was the South Regent.
“The South Regent sent you back?” Stephen wondered if his ears were playing tricks on him. The South Regent was not that kind.
“He not only sent me back but told me that my acting skills sucked and that I’d be dead if I tried investigating the Spencers‘ business. He told me to get ready before making a move.”
“Huh?” Stephen was bewildered. Every word that Jeremy spoke was clear and coherent, but he could not understand the underlying message at all.
Out of character, the South Regent had issued Jeremy an unusually kind warning, “Come back
and see me.
Knowing that the South Regent was far too vicious to say things like that, Stephen was worried that Jeremy was bribed.

Chapter 436
Not long after that, Stephen met Jeremy.
“Tell me the details. What did the South Regent say to you?”
Jeremy nodded and handed over a recording device he had secretly carried which he used to gather evidence.
Stephen listened to the recording and realized that the South Regent did indeed try to bribe Jeremy but ultimately failed. He also mentioned two reasons for letting Jeremy go–he admired Jeremy and believed that Jeremy could still be useful.
However, Stephen would have to take a stab at what was true and what was false.
“If he thinks you’re useful, he probably wants you to investigate the Spencers.”
Stephen’s expression was solemn. If the South Regent let Jeremy go willingly, did that mean there was really something wrong with the Spencers? There was another thing that bothered him. The South Regent had mentioned Ethan.
“Are you curious about Ethan?” Stephen asked Jeremy.
“A little,” Jeremy admitted.
“He’s a criminal. He embezzled money, kept many women, and committed all sorts of crimes. I’ve locked him up now.
Jeremy said, “I see.” He knew that Stephen was lying. As someone who used to consistently rank in the top five during school exams, his intelligence was higher than Stephen’s. Such a simple and even nervous lie could never fool him. He decided to investigate Ethan’s matter secretly because he felt that there was more to uncover.
Stephen asked a few more questions and confirmed that there was nothing wrong with Jeremy, then let him go. “Rest for a few days and then start investigating the Spencers‘ business.”
After Jeremy left, Stephen immediately called the South Regent. “What are you planning?”
The South Regent laughed. “That’s my question. What are you planning? You tricked someone to enter my territory to die. You’re really cold–blooded.”
Stephen froze.
