Stephen raised his head and looked at Ethan. “You sure are heartless.”
“There was never any bond between us, so don’t talk about being heartless. Don’t think too highly of yourself.”
Stephen was fuming. He had given Ethan an opportunity to back down, but Ethan refused to help, showing him no respect at all.
Nolan watched the exchange from the side. The hatred he once held for Ethan had now turned into gratitude. If Stephen was not there and Ethan was not on the second floor, he might have rushed up to hug Ethan then and there.

Nolan fell silent. How could he, of all people, get Ethan to help them? If he could do that, Ethan would not have driven his family,to the brink of destruction in the first place, forcing them to comply with all his demands.
He lit a cigarette and recalled about the past.

As Nolan snapped back to reality, he sighed. “I can’t do it.”
Stephen could not believe it. “Not even you?”
He always thought highly of Nolan. After serving as deputy mayor for twenty years, his quick reflexes and problem–solving skills were top–notch. Surely, handling Ethan should not pose a big problem.
“I can’t.” Nolan said helplessly, “I have no idea when it comes to anything related to Ethan.”
He could tell Stephen still could not fully grasp the situation. The young man had not faced Ethan’s “wrath” firsthand, so he had no idea how terrifying Ethan truly was.
Some situations could be resolved with a little rage or by throwing money at the problem, but with Ethan, even staking one’s life might not change anything.
Stephen took a deep breath and asked, “You seem very afraid of him.”
“It’s normal, but more than fear, we revere him.”
