The hitman was taken away, and he provided more incriminating information about the Spencers‘ business. He even mentioned that Ethan had punished the Spencers in the past.
Nolan realized things were getting out of hand, so he quickly called his father, Edward.
Edward merely said, “Kill him.”
What happened three years ago was a dark part of their history that must never be exposed, and Stephen could never know about it. As such, Nolan managed to get his hands on some poison and used it to kill the hitman.
Stephen had wanted to interrogate the hitman further, but he soon heard about the hitman’s death.
“How did he die? Poison? How could he be poisoned here?”
The hitman revealed a lot of startling information, but Stephen had not verified it yet. Now, the sudden poisoning left him confused and in doubt.
Was the information true? Had the hitman been silenced because he was speaking the truth, or did the hitman poison himself to make the information seem more credible?
He summoned Nolan and asked, “Answer me. Did Ethan punish the Spencers before?”
“Yes.” Having prepared an excuse, Nolan explained, “Three years ago, we made a mistake, and Ethan reprimanded us for it.”
“Was it just a mistake?” Stephen narrowed his eyes.
“Yes. Only that.” Nolan insisted, his voice firm and serious. “Stephen, don’t fall for the South Regent’s lies. He’s trying to sow discord. Don’t forget that he sent someone to kill you!”
At that, Stephen snapped back to his senses. Nolan made sense..He could not let himself be fooled by the South Regent!
He had already been tricked once, which led to Julius‘ death. He could not affo happen again, especially not to Nolan.

He tensed up and retreated while fishing for his phone.
“Mr. Quinn, don’t worry. I’m not here to kill you. I’m here to report Nolan. Do you me?”
Stephen was stunned. “Are you trying to fool me again?”

Stephen’s expression darkened. “What do you want to report?”
He knew he could not escape now, so he might as well hear that person out.
“Three years ago, there was someone named Max from the Spencer family. Along with Edward, he conspired to make Nolan the mayor of Breeze City to control the city. At the same time, they were in contact with foreign forces, planning to establish their own forces and open up channels for foreign trade.
“But later, Lord Rivers appeared, forced Marcus to his death, and stopped Nolan from advancing past the position of deputy mayor. He made the Spencers fall in line and serve Breeze City.”

Stephen fell silent. Had he really been fooled again?
“How would I know whether you’re telling the truth? Do you have evidence to prove your statement? Without evidence, how can I believe you?”
