Nico followed the address Ethan had given him and easily found Lars.
“Lars…” Nico hesitated.
At first, Lars was shocked to see Nico, but then resigned smile played on his lips.
“I thought Ethan Rivers would come for me himself, but I guess I’m still not worthy of him. You’re here to convince me to leave the mountain, aren’t you?”
Nico lowered his head and said, “I had no choice.”
“I can see it on your face, but while you had no choice, I still do.” Lars stood up, looking at Nico solemnly as he said, “Ethan sent you to capture me because he wants me alive, but I won’t let him have that satisfaction. I still have the right to choose death!”
Nico shook in disbelief. “Lars, what are you saying?”
Lars let out a bitter laugh. “I’ve killed and plundered. My hands are covered in blood. There’s no road left for me but death. I’m dead either way, so I might as well make it easier.
“Kill me, Nico. I’m a criminal. If you bring my body down the mountain, you’ll at least get the credit for it, and it could open up new opportunities for you.”
Nico trembled. He could not bring himself to kill Lars!
“Lars, don’t talk like that. Come down the mountain with me. If you admit your wrongs and turn over a new leaf, there’s still hope for you.”
Lars shook his head. “You know that’s not true, Nico. It’s too late for that. If you won’t do it, it’s fine. I’ve prepared a poison for myself over the past two days. All you have to do is to take my body down the mountain and claim the credit.”
With his final word, Lars swallowed the poison in one gulp.
Nico watched helplessly as the poison took effect. However, the poison was not potent enough, and Lars did not die. Instead, he convulged in agony!
Seeing Lars writhing in pain, Nico desperately picked up a rock and ended Lars’s suffering with his own hands. He collapsed powerlessly beside Lars’s body, staying for hours until the night crept in. Only then did he carry Lars’s body slowly down the mountain.
The sight of Lars’s body made his parents faint.
