Chapter 271
Simon never anticipated the South Regent to return the money. He simply called the man to pour out his grievance.
To his surprise, he was shaken by the story he heard.
After the call, he called Stephen right away.
“Don’t go to Ethan anymore. He’s a despicable and deceptive man.”
Stephen had no idea what happened, but since his father had spoken, he simply nodded. “I understand. He will spend the rest of his life in the mountains with no visitors.”
Simon felt relieved. “I need you to prepare some money and find a good location for the villagers. Throw in something extra as compensation. You must let them know you did not intentionally target the villagers, and that it’s all the mayor’s fault.”
Stephen nodded.
“And, keep an eye on Lucas. Don’t let anything happen to him. Get the best doctor to treat
him and take care of the bills.”
Stephen nodded again. He understood the stakes.
If Lucas died, then he would be the culprit, and even if he shifted the blame to the mayor,
he would still be blamed.
In addition to him being the ‘mentee of the Grand Marshal‘, it would only amplify his
mistakes.
As the person who defeated evil three years ago and brought peace to Riveria, he should not be making such a low–level mistake. He had been deceived by mayors from different
cities three times in a row!
If Lucas, the village chief, could survive this and then voice out to support him, Stephen could minimize the damage done.
Before they could continue the conversation, George came bearing bad news.
“This is bad!”
Simon and Stephen frowned. They were tired of this downward spiral.
Stephen turned to George at the entrance.
George was panting, sweating profusely while trying to catch his breath.
“What’s wrong?”
“Lucas, the village chief! His condition has deteriorated, and the hospital just informed us

to be prepared!” George said after a nervous gulp. “The doctors said he might not make it until the day after tomorrow!”
Both Simon and Stephen were shocked.
Lucas could not make it until the day after tomorrow?!
They were just talking about Lucas, and how they could not afford to lose the man. Now, the worst possible scenario happened.
Lucas’s life was on the line.
Simon anxiously said, “Go have a look!”
The call ended.
Stephen said, “Take me to the hospital!”
When he arrived in front of the ward, he saw several villagers kneeling in front, looking devastated.
They saw Stephen whose arrival agitated them, so they got up instantly to stare at him coldly.
“What are you doing here?!”
“Lucas is dying! Are you happy now!?”
Stephen felt guilty. He never would have thought that Lucas had sacrificed so much for

Celestial City. The only thing he could do to the angry villagers was apologize. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it. I am here to help Lucas.”
“You?!” The villagers scoffed.
“You trying to help Lucas? You have the nerve to say that?”
Stephen felt ashamed.
George immediately stepped up and said, “Everyone, it was a misunderstanding, and it won’t happen again. Please believe us. We are on your side!”
“Nonsense!”
The villagers grew furious.
Slandering the hero and calling them gangsters without solid proof, yet these two men claimed to be on their side?
What a joke.
To the villagers, Stephen and George were apologizing simply because they were afraid and did not want the situation to snowball out of control.

The commotion brought the doctor out of the ward. “Please be quiet. This is the hospital.”
The villagers calmed down slightly.
Stephen went up.
“I’m Stephen Quinn. How’s Lucas?”
The doctor knew Stephen because his name had gone viral online.
“It’s bad.” The doctor sighed. “We might be able to extend his life for two more days if we use everything we can, but you guys should make preparations for his funeral.”
