Stephen’s face burned with embarrassment. He had not said a word, but every word he heard was like a knife to his heart.
“Ethan, I know you’re unhappy, but this concerns the city. You can’t just make a decision because you’re upset. You will regret this,” he said with clenched teeth.
Ethan almost burst out laughing.
He said, “Because of your decision, Shawn Hill, Eric Morningstar, Brandon North, and Danny Brooks ruined North Hill City. Because of your decision, again, Seaside City is facing a crisis. And now you want to teach me how to make the right decision?”
Then, he looked straight into Stephen’s eyes as he continued, “You destroyed the economy of North Hill City and caused the mess in Seaside City. Are you really telling me what I should do?”
Stephen faltered back, looking horrified and paled. A few words from Ethan had rendered him speechless.
It was his decision that caused North Hill City to be in ruins and Seaside City to be in a crisis, so anyone but Stephen could tell Ethan to rethink his decision. Stephen had no right to order Ethan around.
Seeing how Ethan crushed his son’s confidence, Simon quickly stepped up to defend Stephen.
“And you did nothing wrong at all? If you didn’t take Howard Green under your wing, how could he be so cunning? At the end of the day, you’re the one at fault.
“Right now, we’re giving you a chance to make things right. If you can get him back, we’ll wipe your slate clean. Depending on how it goes, we might even lift some of your charges.
“But if you refuse to get Howard back, you’ll be considered his accomplice!”

Ethan said with a smile, “Howard is not cunning; it’s Stephen being stupid. You people are not giving me an opportunity; you just don’t want to shoulder the responsibility.
“As for being an accomplice, I have enough charges on me, and one more won’t make any difference.
“Besides, I’ve seen worse in Seaside City three years ago. I saw naked dead bodies on the street and scrawny children who couldn’t even stand. I saw invaders raiding the city…”
Everyone’s eyes widened in shock.
They knew Riveria was not always peaceful due to its geographical disadvantage of being close to the border but never thought Seaside City was a living hell three years ago.
Simon, however, was alarmed. He could not afford to let Ethan continue, or the others would find out that it only took Ethan three years to turn the chaotic city into the strongest one in the country. If they learned the truth, he would immediately be relieved of his duty and his son would never beat Ethan.
