Chapter 5
Six months had passed since I left Simon behind.
That day, Liam and I had just reached our shop when we found it surrounded by uniformed pack.
enforcers.
Without thinking. I rushed inside, directly into Simon’s intense, dark gaze.
I froze in my tracks.
When he saw me, Simon’s body trembled almost imperceptibly.
After a moment of locked eyes, he reached out his hand, his voice hoarse: “Yara, come here!”
Instinctively, I stepped back.
Liam pulled me protectively behind him: “Who the hell are you?”
Simon glanced at our joined hands, his eyes narrowing in displeasure: “Who are you to speak to me
like that?”
This was between Simon and me; I didn’t want anyone else caught in the crossfire.
“This has nothing to do with him. If you have something to say, say it to me.”
Seeing me defending Liam, a flash of hurt crossed Simon’s eyes: “Who is he? Have you been with him these past six months?”
Before I could answer, Liam crossed his arms smugly: “I’m her mate. Of course she’s been with me.”
Hearing this, Simon’s face darkened, his normally calm eyes filling with rage and murderous intent.
He always wore that expression before killing
Knowing Liam was no match for him, I instinctively stepped between them, assuming a fighting
stance.
This was the first time in over a decade that I had stood opposite Simon.

My defensive posture visibly pained him: “Yara, come back with me!”
“I’m not going.”
I had originally come here partly for the scenery, but mainly to get far away from him.
I never expected he would abandon everything to find me.
“Simon, I’m no longer your shadow guard. I won’t go back with
you.”
“No, not as a guard.”
Simon’s eyes showed a rare tenderness: “Come back with me, and I’ll give you anything you want–status, position, whatever you desire.”
Had I heard these words six months ago, I would have gladly followed him to hell and back. But it
was too late now.
After leaving him, I discovered how many wonderful things existed in the world beyond the confines of a pack where I was nothing but a tool without self–identity or independent thought.
I shook my head: “Simon, for the sake of all those times I risked my life for you, let me go.”
His eyes suddenly reddened, and he pointed at Liam: “Why?”
“Is it because of him? Is he the reason you won’t come back with me?”
The problems between Simon and me had never involved anyone else.
Seeing my resolve, Simon left with a final warning:
“Yara, I won’t give up.”
“I will make you willingly return to me.”
I knew Simon wouldn’t stop until he got what he wanted.
Fearing he would return, I suggested to Liam that we take a break from the shop.

But one day he suddenly disappeared, leaving signs of a struggle in our room.
Without hesitation, I rushed to Simon’s lodgings: “Where’s Liam? What have you done with him?”
Simon’s smile faltered: “Yara, you’re confronting me over another male?”
I drew my knife: “Cut the crap. Where is Liam?”
Simon laughed bitterly: “Yara, wake up.”
“Liam has deceived you. He’s not an ordinary wolf–he’s the son of the Northern Territories Alpha. He approached you with an agenda.”
Learning Liam’s true identity surprised me only briefly.
He could conceal his scent without a trace, I had suspected his background wasn’t simple, but I hadn’t expected him to be the Alpha’s son.
After spending half a year together, I could tell whether his intentions toward me were genuine.
Seeing my silence, Simon moved to embrace me: “Yara, come back to me. We can be like before.”
“Rest assured, anything Liam can give you, I can provide. Even what he can’t, I can.”
I impatiently sheathed my knife and turned to leave.
“Stop trying to persuade me. I’m not going back with you.”
Simon suddenly smiled strangely: “That’s not up to you.”
Before I could decipher his meaning, my body suddenly weakened, and I couldn’t access my wolf strength.
I faintly detected an unfamiliar scent emanating from the incense burner.
The incense was drugged.
Simon caught my collapsing body, his voice hypnotic: “Sleep, Yara. When you wake, everything
be back as it should be.”
Will
I bit my lip hard, trying to stay conscious.

But I couldn’t fight the drug’s effects and soon lost awareness.
