Chapter 2
Early the next morning, I went to the shadow guard headquarters to submit my resignation.
Unlike other guards, I was a free wolf.
Simon had once said that whenever I wanted, I could leave.
But I had also said that in this lifetime, I would go nowhere but his side.
Now I was breaking my word.
The Guard Captain looked at me hesitantly: “Does the Alpha know about this?”
He was the only one who knew about my relationship with Simon, and occasionally he would cover
for me, allowing me rest.
Faced with his question, I shook my head bitterly: “It doesn’t matter.”
To Simon, I was just an insignificant subordinate. Someone would quickly take my place.
And he would soon forget me.
The Captain didn’t try to convince me otherwise, only patting my shoulder reassuringly, saying that
in three days someone would replace me–I just needed to stand my last three shifts.
Upon returning to my quarters, a messenger reported that Simon needed me.
I hurried over, nearly colliding with Lyra Kingston.
This was my first time seeing her–truly a graceful, exquisite she–wolf. The difference between us was like night and day; no wonder Simon preferred her.
Seeing how I almost bumped into her, Simon raised his eyelids coldly: “Watch how you walk.”
His words stung, and I was about to apologize.
Lyra clutched his arm, pouting playfully: “Alpha, I’m fine.”

“I’ve heard so much about your exceptional shadow guard. I assume this is her?”
I bowed respectfully: “Yara Stone, at your service… future Luna.”
Hearing this title, Simon’s gaze suddenly fell on me, his eyes filled with an emotion I couldn’t
decipher.
Lyra shyly took my hand: “Guard Stone, Alpha and I are heading to Moon Valley to see the
wildflowers. Come with us.”
As Simon’s shadow guard, wherever he went, I followed.
Along the way, Lyra chattered excitedly, clinging to his arm, finding everything fascinating.
Simon didn’t seem annoyed, patiently conversing with her, a hint of a smile playing on his lips.
I followed a few steps behind, silently watching.
My rank was too low to walk beside him; I could only observe from a distance, never expecting to stand as his equal.
Ahead, Simon plucked a fallen leaf from her hair, showing her a tenderness I’d never witnessed
-before.
I looked away dejectedly.
At midday, Lyra called to me: “Yara, come join us for lunch!”
I respectfully stepped back: “That wouldn’t be proper.”
Simon didn’t even look up, putting a pastry in her bowl: “Don’t bother with her. These treats will get
cold.”
Hearing this, Lyra quickly forgot about me.
I didn’t persist, finding a quiet spot to eat my cold sandwich.
Just then, disaster struck!
A group of masked attackers appeared from nowhere, their silver–edged blades already drawn.

I leapt forward, positioning myself in front of Simon.
He pushed me aside: “Protect Lyra. If anything happens to her, your life is forfeit.”
Before I could react, he had already engaged the attackers.
I carefully guided Lyra away from the fighting.
When a reckless attacker charged toward us, I kicked him away, then dispatched another trying to
ambush us from behind.
Blood splattered across Lyra’s clothes.
Having been sheltered all her life, she had never witnessed such violence. She screamed in terror, clinging to me tightly.
I couldn’t fight properly with her attached to me, and could only dodge attack after attack while protecting her.
An attacker lunged at us, and as I prepared to evade, Lyra suddenly pushed me toward the blade.
“Thunk-”
The knife plunged into my shoulder, the pain making me break into a cold sweat.
I looked at her in shock while Lyra crouched on the ground, covering her head.
Gritting my teeth, I slit the attacker’s throat.
Just as I was about to collapse, the pack guards finally subdued the remaining attackers.
Simon immediately rushed over, focused entirely on Lyra.
“Lyra, are you alright?”
“Are you hurt?”
Lyra threw herself into his arms, sobbing: “Alpha, I thought I’d never see you again.”
Simon kissed her forehead tenderly: “Don’t be afraid. I’m here. I won’t let anything happen to you.”

I stared blankly at the two embracing after their brush with death, blood dripping from my fingertips onto the ground.
Until someone said: “Yara, you’re wounded.”
Only then did I surrender to darkness, passing out.
