Wendy had never truly cared for George over the years, largely because she had no feelings for her husband. She had always known about George’s entanglement with Charlotte, yet she never stopped him. Deep down, she didn’t see George as her son.
His birth had been nothing more than an accident. After her marriage, she had no intention of having a child with her husband. She felt nothing for him and had only married him to take advantage of his position as the Frost family’s steward, giving her an excuse to live under the same roof as Charlotte.
After their wedding, she had always kept her husband at arm’s length. The only time they were intimate was the result of a night when both of them had been drunk. That single night led to her pregnancy with George.
When she found out she was pregnant, her first instinct was to terminate the pregnancy. Without telling her husband, she went to the hospital.
However, the doctor informed her that she had a low chance of conceiving and that this child might be her only opportunity to have one. The doctor urged her to think it through, but she was resolute about having an abortion.
Her husband eventually found out. Surprisingly, he didn’t blame her. Instead, he told her she could do whatever she wanted, fully respecting her decision.
He had always been kind to her, even knowing that she didn’t love him and only used him. He had never uttered a word of reproach.
Thinking back to his goodness, Wendy was overcome with regret. “Martin, I wronged you.”
She truly had. From beginning to end, her relationship with him had been nothing but manipulation and betrayal–one unforgivable act after another.
The version of their story she had told Suzy was fabricated, but her affair with Zack Barker was painfully real. From the day she married, she had maintained a clandestine relationship with Zack.
However, it was only recently that she discovered the truth: Zack had been planted in her life by Charlotte. He had never had any real feelings for her. Everything he did was meticulously orchestrated under Charlotte’s orders.
The irony was that, at first, Wendy hadn’t believed it. She thought Zack was just making excuses for his betrayal.

But the more Wendy thought about it, the more ridiculous she felt. “Wendy, you might just be the most foolish person alive. The evidence was all right in front of you, and yet you still believed she couldn’t be that cruel!
As Suzy said, she didn’t even spare her own family. A person as heartless as that, completely devoid of humanity!”
Thinking about her husband and son, Wendy broke down in uncontrollable sobs. She felt like the ultimate joke. For so many years she had been living in a script Charlotte had carefully written just for her.
She was nothing but a puppet, dancing to Charlotte’s strings, following the plot she had laid out. Whatever Charlotte wanted her to do, she did–without hesitation, without question. Even after Charlotte’s death, she had remained unwaveringly loyal.
“Charlotte…”
As memories of all the things she had done under Charlotte’s deceit flooded her mind, Wendy was consumed by fury. If only she could tear her apart, piece by piece. But Charlotte was already gone…
Then again, revenge didn’t require the living.
Wendy’s lips curled into a cold smile. “Charlotte, this time, I’m going to settle the score. Every bit of manipulation, every lie you used against me–I’ll make sure you pay.”
