Dylan waited patiently, confident that Claude, a smart man, would weigh the stakes wisely. Even Desmond thought there was no question Claude would sign the contract.

Trying to find the right words, Desmond added, “Some people can’t just be replaced, Mr. Claude.”
He slid the contract back toward Claude. “This is your first major project since taking the helm at Harlow Corporation. All eyes are on you–especially Mr. Matthew’s, from his hospital bed.”
Claude’s smile didn’t waver. “That project was originally led by Julian. Even if I succeed, it’ll still carry its fair share of criticism. But thank you, Mr. Wright–I appreciate the gesture.”
Desmond started to speak again, but Dylan waved him off, rising to adjust his jacket. Looking down at Claude, he said, “I only hope, Mr. Claude, that you won’t regret today’s
decision.”

Dylan’s mouth curved into a slight smirk. “Farewell, then.”

Dylan passed by without pausing.
Suzy, equally unfazed, stepped into the room and closed the door firmly behind her.

The moment the door closed, Dylan’s steps halted abruptly, causing Desmond to almost bump into him.
Even from behind, Desmond could sense the tension radiating off his boss‘ straightened shoulders and rigid posture. Dylan’s low–pressure aura was unmistakable.
Sensing the need to break the silence, Desmond took a step forward. “Sir, perhaps I could. have a private word with Mrs. Wright?”
Dylan cast him a glance. “About what?”
“Obviously about getting you two back together,” Desmond thought, biting back his true response. “As if I’d secretly meet with her for a date.”
Not that he’d be brave enough to meddle in his boss‘ love life, nor foolish enough to think Suzy would ever look his way even if he did.
“So really, sir,” he thought, “that look of yours is entirely unnecessary.”

Dylan gave him another appraising glance before resuming his stride. Desmond sighed inwardly, quickly falling into step behind him. They’d barely taken two steps when- Thud!
Desmond rubbed his throbbing forehead from the unexpected collision and quickly apologized. “I’m sorry, sir. I didn’t mean to…”
In all fairness, he hadn’t been at fault. Dylan’s unpredictable stops and starts made following him a hazardous task. Still, Desmond held his tongue, unwilling to voice even the slightest complaint.
Instead of lashing out, Dylan simply replied in a calm, almost dismissive tone, “Know your limit.”
