“I don’t think they’ve found her yet. If they had, even without us reaching out, he’d have contacted us by now.”
So much time had passed without any updates from Victor’s side, which clearly meant they hadn’t found Nadia.
This reminded Desmond of the time Suzy went missing. It had taken ages to track her down, with no leads for the longest time.
Could Nadia be like Suzy, hiding behind a series of aliases? If so, Desmond mused, the two of them truly were kindred spirits in their knack for vanishing without a trace.
Dylan waved him off. “You can go.
Desmond, feeling as though he’d been pardoned, quickly made his exit.
Dylan pinched the bridge of his nose before pulling out his phone to call Victor. He knew all too well the frustration of searching endlessly for someone. As a close friend, he couldn’t just sit by; otherwise, the isolation and desperation could drive a person mad.
The call rang several times before Victor finally picked up.
“Dylan…” His voice was heavy with exhaustion.
“Do you have enough manpower?” Dylan asked. If not, I can send more people your way.”
“I have enough,” Victor replied with a bitter laugh. “It doesn’t matter how many people I send out. She doesn’t want to be found. It’s all the same.”
There was a pause before he added, his voice tinged with frustration and regret, “You know, Dylan, I only just realized how capable Nadia truly is. She’s managed to hide so well. I used to think that without the Steele family, she wouldn’t survive, that she couldn’t make it a single day. But now I see that it was just my arrogance all along.”
“Yeah,” Dylan murmured with a faint, rueful smile. “I used to think the same about Suzy. Turns out, it was never about them needing us, it was always about us needing them.‘
“Yes, I can’t live without her!” Victor’s voice broke, a tremor of suppressed tears creeping in. ” I used to dream of breaking free from her. But now that she’s gone, I’ve realized my world can’t exist without her!
“These days, it’s like she’s etched into my mind. When I eat, she’s there. When I sleep, she’s there. When I walk, it’s her I see. No matter what I do, she’s always in front of me.
“Dylan, I regret it–I really regret it! You warned me before, told me not to push too far, that I’d regret it one day. I didn’t believe you. I even argued, swearing I’d never regret it in this lifetime.
“I even said that if she were the last woman on Earth, I still wouldn’t love her. But the truth is

“Dylan, I love her. I’m terrified of her dying. I’m even more terrified that by the time I find her, she’ll already be gone.”
Victor’s voice cracked entirely as he sobbed, “I don’t want her to die. I’d rather it be me who’s sick. She’s so good. How could she fall ill? Why is life so cruel to her?
“She grew up without a family, and now, at such a young age, she’s been struck with this illness! Tell me, do you think it’s my fault? Do you think she’s sick because of me?
“They say stress makes women more prone to illness. I’ve spent years making her angry. So maybe… maybe I caused this. Do you think it’s all because of me?”
Dylan tightened his lips, his grip on the phone firm as he listened. If Victor was the
embodiment of regret, Dylan could see his own reflection in that mirror. Perhaps he was even luckier than Victor, at least Suzy was healthy.
With quiet determination, Dylan finally said, “You’ll find Nadia. And Suzy will find a way to cure her.”
And he would find a way to win Suzy back.
