She cut him off before he could continue. “Giving up your own preferences for someone else is a painful thing to do. I’ve been through it myself, and in the end, all it left me with was regret. That’s why I don’t want you blaming me in the future like I blame myself now. Do you understand what I’m saying?”
Suzy locked her gaze on Dylan, watching as pain slowly clouded his eyes. But she still pressed on with the next words. “In this world, nothing stays unchanged–least of all love. It’s an clusive, fleeting thing, prone to shifting in an instant.
“Take me, for example. When I cared about you, I could do anything for you. I even thought I couldn’t live without you. But now? That feeling is gone. And without it, you’re just someone I happen to know better than a stranger.
“You might feel something for me now, but one day, that feeling will fade–or even disappear entirely. So why waste time on something we already know won’t last?”
Dylan shook his head, unwilling to agree. “You’re right that nothing in this world is permanent, and people change. But that conclusion you’ve drawn–that’s not a certainty. We can’t just give up on something now because of what might happen later.”
Suzy nodded. “Fine. Then keep at it. Just don’t bother me anymore. I don’t have the time or patience to entertain you.”
With that, she stood to leave, but Dylan caught her hand. “You haven’t finished eating.”
Suzy glanced at the table filled with dishes. “There’s not a single thing here I like. You can keep it for yourself.”
Pulling her hand free, she grabbed her bag and started walking away. After a few steps, she abruptly turned back. For a moment, Dylan thought she was going to sit down again.
Instead, she stood by the table, looking down at him, her expression unreadable. Her red lips parted slightly as she said, “Dylan, aren’t you asking for a chance? Fine, I’ll give you one.”
Dylan’s face lit up with excitement. “Really?”
“Yes.”
Women truly were unpredictable. Moments ago, she had been resolute, and now, just like that, she’d changed her mind.
Dylan liked this unpredictability.
However, Suzy’s next words shattered the brief joy that had lit up his heart.
“I’ll allow you to be my friend. As for getting remarried…” She leaned in slightly, her flawless face drawing closer. “Forget about it.”

“What? Not interested?” Suzy raised an eyebrow and straightened up. “Think carefully. This is your last chance. Don’t come regretting it later, because by then, I won’t even be willing to be friends with you.”
Dylan’s lips pressed into a thin line. “Do you really have to treat me this way?”
“What have I done to you?” Suzy replied, her tone mocking. “The way you’re acting, anyone who sees us might think I’m bullying you. For heaven’s sake, I’ve already been more than generous. If it were anyone else, I wouldn’t have even given them this chance! So, I’ll ask you one last time–yes or no?”
She glanced at her phone. “It’s almost dawn. Hurry up and decide. I need to get some sleep.” This was the perfect example of a battle of wits where Suzy always had the upper hand. Dylan could deal with anyone, but when it came to Suzy, he was completely powerless.

If he said no, seeing her again in the future would be as rare as winning the lottery. But if he said yes, they’d only be friends, and getting her to consider remarrying him would become even harder.
