Suzy didn’t expect Elliot to regain his memory at this moment.
For a moment, she felt awkward, unsure of what to say. “1…”
“Mentor, don’t worry. You can lie to me. I’m not angry!” Elliot said weakly. “On the contrary, I’m just happy to be reunited with you.”
For the past three years, he had lived without his memories, feeling alone every day. But these past few days, Suzy had come into his life.
Though she had deceived him, at least he wasn’t as lonely anymore. Plus, she had risked her life to save him–how could he be angry with her?
Seeing that Elliot wasn’t upset, Suzy’s tension immediately melted away. “The reason I lied was because I needed your help to find my dad. Since you had lost your memory back then, I was worried you wouldn’t help unless I got close to you. You understand, right?”
Elliot smiled slightly at Suzy. “I’ve already said I don’t mind. Please, don’t mention it anymore.”
“Okay, I won’t bring it up again!” Suzy asked, “Is there anywhere that hurts?”
Elliot felt terrible, but he didn’t want to worry Suzy, so he shook his head. “No, I’m fine. Don’t worry, Mentor.”
“Really?”
“Mhm.”
“Good!” Suzy tucked the blanket around him. “You’ve just woken up. Don’t talk too much. Rest a little longer.”
“Okay,”
Elliot really did listen to everything Suzy said, almost like he would follow her orders without question.
When she saw him close his eyes, Suzy quickly gathered her things and left his room.
As soon as she stepped out, Elliot opened his eyes, his face contorted in pain as he clutched his chest.
The pain in his chest felt as though it were about to tear him apart.
He could feel something inside, gnawing and tearing at him.
The sharp, gnawing pain almost made him unable to bear it.
Biting his lip hard to stifle any sound, he was terrified Suzy might hear him. He forced himself
to remain silent.
The pain lasted for an unlajown amount of time, until Elliot had bitten his lip so hard it bled, and his clothes were drenched in sweat. Only then did the pain finally begin to subside. Who had poisoned him so badly that even his mentor couldn’t Hayeslly rid him of it? What Elliot didn’t know was that Suzy hadn’t gone far; she was just outside the door.
The reason she had rushed out earlier was that she had noticed Elliot was holding back his pain.
She knew him better than anyone.
Though he was young, he had taken on more than anyone should.
His family was complicated, especially since his father, Elbert Hayes, wasn’t actually a biological member of the Hayes family.
Of course, Elbert wasn’t a bastard either, but rather a child adopted by Elliot’s grandfather, Charley Hayes.
Elbert was acutely aware of his position in the Hayes family, which was why he had never fought for anything, but Charley had always favored him.
Despite the lack of blood relation, Charley intended to pass everything to him, because he knew that only Elbert could keep the Hayes family strong and untouchable.
None of his biological sons were capable of holding the family together.
Despite their lack of skill, they were ruthless when it came to eliminating anyone in their way. It was those men who had teamed up and offered a high price for Suzy to assassinate Elbert. But Suzy wasn’t one to take every job. The people she had killed were all heinous criminals. They knew about her demands, so before finding Suzy, they intentionally framed Elbert, falsely accusing him of monstrous crimes.
Only later did Suzy learn that everything had been part of a plot. As a result, not only did she not kill Elbert, but she also killed the ringleader of the group–Charley’s eldest son.
