What Suzy didn’t expect was that the moment Allen hung up her call, he immediately called Desmond.
“Desmond, we’ve known each other for a long time, and I’ve always respected you as a stand- up guy. I heard you’ve been looking for my boss recently.
“Let me guess–your boss is regretting his choices? Does he think he’s so important that he can just waltz back whenever he wants? What does he take my boss for? Someone who’ll drop everything at his beck and call?
After a lengthy rant, Allen softened his tone. “Alright, fine. I get it. You’re just like me- following orders, doing your job, and catching all the heat when things go wrong.
“Out of sympathy for our shared misery, I’ll clue you in. My boss just called me, asking me to investigate Tanya Goodwin. Her father’s disappearance might have something to do with Tanya. Pass that along to your boss but tell him that this is his last chance. If he screws it up again, I’m done sticking my neck out for him.”
When Desmond relayed Allen’s words to Dylan, he added his own embellishments.
“Sir, Allen said Mrs. Wright might be in trouble and could use some help. He’s tied up taking care of Riley and can’t handle it himself, so…”
After a brief pause, Desmond’continued, “Sir, I truly think Allen is trying to help you. He’s probably on the same page as me and wants you and Mrs. Wright to reconcile.
“You and Mrs. Wright genuinely love each other. Honestly, I think you’re overthinking everything. She doesn’t care whether or not you’ll be able to walk again. Even if in the worst- case scenario where you never stand again, so what? Plenty of people with disabilities are happily married. Do you think their partners resent them?
“On the contrary, many of them live happier, more fulfilling lives than so–called normal couples.
“You really shouldn’t let this hold you back. Mrs. Wright is one of a kind, a truly remarkable woman. You’ve already missed your chance with her once. Now that she’s willing to give you another shot, you can’t afford to let this slip through your fingers. If you do, there might not be another chance.”
Desmond had decided to lay it all on the line today.
For weeks, he’d grown tired of seeing Dylan in his perpetually sour mood. If his boss used to be an ice–cold figure, now he was an upgraded “buffed” version of that. He’d practically become a walking freezer, chilling the atmosphere wherever he went.
The entire company was on edge. Department managers were terrified to approach him with updates, and when they did, they’d come crying to Desmond afterward.

Lately, Desmond had been forced into the role of an unofficial therapist, listening to their woes. Sure, it helped them feel better, but it left him feeling like an overflowing garbage bin, burdened with problems that weren’t his to carry
So, he had to say something. For everyone’s sake Dylan needed to reconcile with Suzy. Life for all of them would improve if the two were back together.
However, after everything Desmond had said, Dylan’s response was just two curt words.
“Get out.”

Dylan pointed to the door. “I don’t like repeating myself.”
Desmond frowned deeply. “Allen said this is your last chance. If you miss it again, he’s done helping you.”
With that, Desmond turned and walked to the door.
Just before leaving, he stopped and added, “By the way, Allen has a lot of sway with Mrs. Wright. You might want to think this through.”
Dylan, of course, understood Desmond’s good intentions.
