Suzy’s voice softened, deliberately hypnotic. “You must have dreamed about your father, haven’t you? Even though he didn’t care for Evangeline, he doted on you. His attitude toward the two of you couldn’t have been more different.
“When you were born, you brought him honor. The Empress favored him greatly at the time, so he saw you as his lucky star. But everything changed when Evangeline was born. He blamed her for his downfall and believed she was a curse that caused him to lose everything. So, he poured all his love and affection onto you.
“The best food, the best toys, the best clothes they were all yours. Everything revolved around you. And slowly, this gave you a dangerous habit–you started to believe everything in this world belonged to you and had nothing to do with Evangeline. Am I right?”
“Yes!” Serena, unknowingly falling into the trance, blurted out. Her emotions shifted, and bitterness seeped into her voice. “You’re right! Everything was mine to begin with.
“Evangeline stole it from me! Father always said she was unworthy of being Empress. The throne was meant to be mine. But after he was gone, she shamelessly coveted what wasn’t
hers.
“If it doesn’t belong to her, I have every right to take it back. Everything I’ve done was to reclaim what’s rightfully mine. How is that wrong?”

Even though Evangeline had suspected the truth for a long time, hearing Serena admit it aloud still stung deeply. “All these years, I thought you truly cared for me. But in your heart, you’re just like Father. You’ve never truly seen me as your equal!”
As a child, Evangeline would always envy how much their father adored Serena.
She didn’t understand why, as his daughters, he cherished Serena so deeply yet despised her so much.

As she grew older, she came to understand the source of his resentment. For a time, she even believed it was her fault.

Serena’s face twisted with contempt as she glared at Evangeline. “You’re right. I do look down on you. If it weren’t for you, Father and I wouldn’t have lived the lives we did. Everything was ruined because of you, you wretched curse!
“Why were you even born? You destroyed my happiness, Father’s happiness–everything! So just die!”
Like someone driven mad, Serena pulled a gun from her waistband and fired directly at Evangeline.
