When Suzy woke, her gaze met stark white walls–a strange, unfamiliar room that was clearly not a hospital. A dull ache lingered at the spot on her neck where the man had struck her.
Looking down, she noticed her leg injury had been carefully bandaged. Just as she was about to throw off the blanket and get up, the door swung open. She looked up, and her gaze locked with Hawk’s.
This time, his face was bare, free of the usual mask.
He looked surprisingly well–nothing like someone who had been gravely injured.
Suzy didn’t dwell on it for long.
Considering Hawk’s expertise in medicine, it wasn’t surprising if he had access to something that could speed up recovery. No wonder he’d brushed off her concern earlier. He didn’t need her worry. After all, he was a doctor.
Catching her staring, Hawk smirked. “What’s the matter? You woke up and forgot who I am?”
His teasing smile made Suzy avert her eyes.
“Thanks,” she said flatly. “I’ve got things to do. I’ll get going.”
Before he could respond, she was already sliding off the bed. But Hawk was quicker. In a flash, he crossed the room and pressed her back onto the bed. “Your leg’s hasn’t recovered yet. What are you doing?”
Suzy shot him a glance, shaking off his hand. “It’s just a scratch. I’m not dying.”
Her focus shifted elsewhere–Charlotte had escaped. She needed to get moving before it became even harder to track her down.
But something nagged at her.
Hawk had told her to call Allen and Riley to pick her up, so why had he changed his mind and brought her here instead?
For a moment, a strange thought crept into her mind.
Was it possible Hawk and the masked man weren’t the same person? Yet if it wasn’t him, then who else could it have been? After all, it was just the two of them there.
Her musing was interrupted by Hawk’s voice, a sly grin tugging at his lips. “Using your own words back at you. I’m worried you’d drop dead halfway.”
Suzy was speechless. So, the masked man really was him.

Hawk had to be out of his mind. One moment he wore a mask, the next he didn’t–it was like he was battling some form of split personality.
Forcing Suzy back onto the bed, he began shrugging off his jacket.
Her eyes narrowed as she shot upright. “What are you doing?”
He arched a brow, his expression unreadable. “What do you think?”
Before she could retort, he added, “I saved your life twice. A simple thank–you doesn’t seem enough.”
Her frown deepened, and her voice turned icy. “Hawk, if you’re planning to cash in on your so–called ‘good deeds,‘ you can forget it right now. I don’t care what you want, but this is not happening.”
His lips curved into a wry smile. “Even though I nearly lost my life saving yours?”
“Yes,” she replied without hesitation.
Hawk pressed his lips together, a faint bitterness flashing in his eyes. “I thought maybe this time you’d soften a little. Turns out you’re still as heartless as ever.”
His tone shifted abruptly. “What if the one who saved you was Dylan? Would your answer be the same?”
“Yes.”
It didn’t matter who it was–Dylan, Hawk, or anyone else–Suzy wouldn’t let anyone into her heart. Her only goal was to find Charlotte and avenge her parents and brothers.
After that, she would build a proper resting place for her deceased family and live out her days nearby, quietly keeping them company.
“Figures,” Hawk muttered with a sigh. “They say women are emotional creatures, but you? You’re always the exception, aren’t you?”
Any other woman would have been moved by being saved twice, but not Suzy. Her icy demeanor hadn’t thawed an inch.
Suzy assumed their conversation had reached its end and Hawk had finally understood her stance. Yet to her disbelief, he resumed unbuttoning his shirt.
