An answer seemed to be forming in her mind, but she quickly dismissed it. “Impossible. This information must be flawed.”
To verify the validity of the documents, Suzy called Dylan.
Almost as if he’d anticipated her need for answers, he picked up after a single ring. “You’ve looked through it?” His deep, steady voice came through the line.
Suzy frowned. “Dylan, where did you get this information?”
“I can’t tell you the source,” he admitted after a pause, “but I can guarantee its authenticity. Honestly, I’ve suspected something strange from the start. It’s almost as if Ruby deliberately revealed her identity. If she’d truly wanted to remain hidden, she wouldn’t have been caught so easily.”
Suzy shared that sentiment. It was why she had orchestrated Ruby and Mark’s meeting- to verify whether Ruby’s claims were genuine. The reason for her call wasn’t a lack of trust in Dylan’s integrity but an inability to accept the results.
The possibility that the woman she had believed to be her biological aunt all these years was not related to her by blood was crushing.
After ending the call, Suzy sat motionless, staring at the stark black–and–white text on the A4 pages for what felt like an eternity. Each reread brought a fresh wave of pain.
Still, she clung to denial, convincing herself, “Dylan’s word isn’t absolute. Even if he’s not lying, it doesn’t mean this document is accurate. What if someone deliberately used him to get to me?”

Especially when Suzy entered her parents‘ bedroom, the tears she had been holding back broke free. Standing in the dust–filled room, she was overwhelmed by memories of the joyful times she had spent with her parents. Like a child, she cried uncontrollably, her sobs echoing in the quiet space.
“Mom, Dad… I miss you so much…”
She didn’t know how long she cried before her emotions finally settled. Taking a deep breath, she approached the hidden compartment in the wardrobe.
She remembered seeing her father retrieve something from it orice when she was young, Curious, she had asked, “Why is there a hidden compartment here?”
Her father had smiled and replied, “Because it holds very important things.”
“Did you keep a lot of money in there?” Her younger self had been naive and full of wonder.
Her father had chuckled, ruffling her hair affectionately. “It’s something even more important than money.
“What is it?” she had asked eagerly.
Before he could answer, her mother had called them from another room, leaving her question unresolved. To this day, she had never known what was inside.
Now, as Suzy opened the compartment, she found a black wooden box secured with a nine hole lock. It took her some time to undo the intricate mechanism, but eventually, the box opened. Inside, it wasn’t gold, jewels, or anything of monetary value. Instead, it held- Her parents‘ marriage certificate and the birth certificates of her and her three brothers. Her chest tightened as a fresh wave of emotions hit her. To her father, these documents had been more valuable than money or treasures.
If her parents and brothers were still alive, they would have been the happiest family in the world.
