Chapter 41
Neil pov
I closed my lips over Ella’s, she threw her hand over my neck tried to undo the button of my shirts.
She started moaning against my lips, her hand trailing down to my pants, she started fiddling with the buckle of my belt while our lips were still connected and then trailed her hand down.
She suddenly pulled away from me, “Neil?”
I closed my eyes tight with a sigh, moving from off her and laying on the bed on my back.
“Ella, 1-”
She immediately sat up pulling the sheets up to cover herself, “w.. why? You.. you aren’t even hard,” her lips started quivering.
“I’m-”
“Neil, I’m lying here completely naked!” She started to sob, “does that not do anything to move you?” She buried her face in her hands, “oh my goodness, Neil, you have truly fallen out of love for me.”
She got to her feet in a haste, pulling a simple night gown over her head.
With a sigh I got up after her.
“Ella,” I caught her wrist, stopping her as she tried to take her leave, “it’s not what it looks like,” I told her. I didn’t know what had come over me. The entire time seeing Leah my body had been reacting so hard, it was so difficult to keep myself in place. I hated seeing Ella so upset but for some reason, my body wasn’t moved by her actions.
I stared at her tear streaked face, I couldn’t her too. I’d waited so long to have her back.
“It’s only because I just got back from the hospital, my body is still a little weak,” I told her, she stared at me with down turned lips, sniffing hard, “hm?”
“Just because of that?”
I nodded, my blank expression unchanging.
“That’s nonsense.” She shook her head, “you’re lying Neil, you’ve fallen out of love for me! Five fucking years! Have I wasted my time?” She shook her head, “you feel nothing for me…” She frowned, clenching her fists by her side before closing the distance between us.
She slapped my chest hard, on repeat, it did nothing to make me budge.
“Is this because of her? It’s because of Leah isn’t it?” She raised her voice in my face.
“Ella, what are you talking about?” I caught her hand, stopping her from hitting me even further.
“How would I prove it to you?” I asked her, as she continued to sob.
I left her side and went to the drawer in my room, pulling out a box. I was supposed to give this to her nine years ago. I opened the box and sighed at it. It was a ring. I always hated that Ella left but I couldn’t blame her. Our families were motivated by the business relationship and they hadn’t cared that we were really young in the first place, they thought since we would always end up together, why push the marriage backwards. Ella was only eighteen at the time and I was twenty. We’d been dating for two years by then. She must have felt so overwhelmed and decided to pursue her career. Leah had also been eighteen when she had to take her cousin’s place, and I’d hated her for it too.

Now we were twenty–seven and twenty–nine, there was really no point in wasting time.
I turned around on my heels and faced her with the ring, will you marry me then?
Her eyes widened in shock.
She threw her hands over her mouth.
Ella looked at me, tears still in her eyes. Then, without a word, she stepped forward and wrapped her arms around me. I held her tight, afraid she’d slip away.
“I love you,” I whispered, saying the words for the first time since she’d returned.
She didn’t answer. Just held me.
The next day at breakfast, Ella cleared her throat. My mom and I looked up from our plates.
“I’m engaged,” she said. Everyone on the table turned to look at her.
My mom blinked, staring between us. “What?”
Ella smiled, raising her ring finger with the diamond ring on it, “yep, Neil proposed last night.”
My mom gasped. Then she started crying. “Oh, my boy!” She reached across the table, grabbing my hand, then Ella’s. You two, oh, God is good!”
Ella laughed. “Mother, don’t cry.”
“I can’t help it! You don’t know how long I prayed for this day! I’m so glad you’re finally came to your senses Neil”
Everyone continued to chatter their excitement.
My mom sniffed loudly. “Oh, sweetheart, I need to call everyone!”
“Wait,” Ella said, grinning. “Before you do that, I have an announcement.”
Mom clutched her chest like she couldn’t take any more surprises. “What now?”
“I’m having a pre–wedding party,” Ella said.
I frowned. “A what?”
“A pre–wedding party. On an island.”
I blinked again. “Why?”
She shrugged. “Because the last time you went to that island, you were happy. I saw you smiling Neil! I can’t remember the last time I saw you smile, so I was up all night researching islands we could throw a party on and I think I did find one, it’s a little far but it will be worth it, it will be the talk of the town, everyone will be there to witness me taking my man as I should have this entire freaking time.”
My mom wiped her eyes. “Oh, Ella, you are perfect for my son.”
Ella smirked at me. “See? Even Mom agrees.”
I swallowed hard. It was fine. I loved Ella, so I could do anything for her. I reminded myself.
