The drive felt like hours, but we finally stood in front of the place. It was a nice resort, the palm trees surrounding us, the mountains in the distance, and the busyness of life far behind.
Max was constantly checking in on us the whole rode, looking outside multiple times, scanning for any unpicious behavior or signs of someone trailing us, but it seemed we had arrived safely.
I stopped and thought about Neil. I knew his worries were just temporary, and all he cared about was still Ella.
After what felt like forever, we managed to haul my things out of the car, and Max stayed clone behind me.
Helen had slept half the khrgey and stirred when I lifted her in my arms.
She blinked a few times before bringing her eyes open and when she noticed our environment, the gasped, hopping out of my arms, “we are here?”
“Yes baby,” I put up a smile.
She squeezed between two of the security carrying our bags and I apologized to them.
“Mommy I love it!” She jumped in the air, “it sounds so amazing” she clapped her hands together, spreading her arms and making airplane sounds as she ran around the white resort and the grass floors.
I looked around at the rectangle shaped building and its tall fences.
It did really look like it was a safe zone away from everything that we had to deal with back home.
I frowned, clenching my fists by my side, “this is nothing but a vacation,” I reminded myself, “we will get this over with in the matter of a few seconds,” I said to myself, “just a few weeks and everything will go back to the way things were.”
My mind briefly crossed to Neil and I wondered how he was doing, if he was still in the hospital. I felt bad for my hurtful words but I needed him back to how he was. He was only being kind to me because he thought I was in danger anyways, well now he was going to stop bugging in my life anymore and-
My thoughts were interrupted when Max placed a hand on my shoulder, “hey are you okay?” He asked in a small tone
I shrugged my shoulder at him and smiled, “yeah,” I pulled free and grabbed some more of my things before heading in.
It was really similar to the mansion back in LA, golden accents, but very hot vibes, the entire theme being white and beige minimalism set up.
We settled out things in our rooms and after setting up a cartoon for Helen, Max and I both went up to the rooftop.
“I chose what I thought you would like. It has a nice pool, and we can go on walks,” he said as I leaned over the railings, looking ahead at the mountains in the distance.
The breeze from the trees was nice against my skin, and I loved the sound of the birds chirping in the distance.
I tilted my head to the side to look at Max, he had his eyes fixed on the view ahead, the breeze tossing his hair around and his lips in a small smile.
He looked so good in his black shirt and white shorts, like something out of a chic magazine.
“I feel so sad that you’re abandoning everything you’ve worked for just to come with me.” I sighed after a while.
“I’m not abandoning them. That’s one of the perks of being my own CEO,” he said, turning his head to look at me, folding his hands over the railings.

“Stop.” I frowned. “I really hate that you had to leave your meeting just for my sake.”

“I don’t think you understand, Leah. You are the most important thing to me, out of everyone and anything. I would give everything in a minute for you.”
“And you’ve proven that many times.” I looked at him, my eyebrows furrowed together, “why are you doing this?”
“Doing what?”
“Even five years ago, you had no reason to save me from that pool. It feels like you’re an angel sent from heaven just for my sake. And even now, you’re still doing things to keep me and Helen safe. How can I ever repay you?”
“You know,” he said, “I actually know a way,” he simply said.
“You say it!” I clapped my hands.
“Yeah?”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes. You know it,” I crossed my
around my arms
chest.
He scratched the back of his neck a little, “don’t you think five years are a long time?”
I furrowed my eyebrows. “What are you talking about?”
“I think it’s pretty long enough to get over somebody.”
I widened my eyes, wondering how he knew I was thinking about Neil in that exact moment.
I’d definitely gotten over him, but I was still human. If he was constantly getting involved in my life, of course I would think about him.
I was about to say something to defend myself when Max cut me off.
“I like you, Leah. I like you so much.”
That took me by surprise.
“I like you too. Very much, in fact. I like you the most, and you know how much I do not like people at all.”
“I know.”
He seemed like he was hesitating, “but this is different.”
There was an eeriness in his voice that made me a little worried.
“But yeah,” he continued, “I like you, more than friends.”
He put one hand
I froze in place.
on my
shoulder.
“And I have, ever since I met you for the first time,” he continued, “I really think enough time has passed for you to know
how I feel.”
I stared at him as his voice softened.
“Please, give me a chance, Leah. I love you, as a woman.”
