Chapter 35

His words immediately incited me, and the thought of being able to be him felt relaxing. I found myself getting pulled into his suggestions, and it was not until he raised his eyebrows that I realized I hadn’t given him an answer.

I closed my eyes, immediately retracting my hand from his. “There will be no need for that.”

I took a step away from him, sitting properly.

He had no expressions on his face but I could hear the desperation in his voice, “no, trust me, I can protect you with everything.”

I shook my head fast, Ella’s words coming to my head. Even though she was used to spewing nonsense, I found that there was some truth in her words. Ever since I came back into his life, he had been getting into one danger or the other, and I couldn’t help but feel like I was responsible for it.

I wasn’t about to pull him into another web of something similar. He had been going back and forth in danger just because of me, taking all of the shots for me.

“Leah?” He pressed for a response from me.

I shook my head at him. “No, there will be no need for that. Listen, I just want things to go back to the way things were. Stop interfering in my life.”

“What are you talking about? It’s not your fault that these things have been happening.” He sat up, not minding that he was supposed to still be laying down, “and interfering with your life? I saved your life.”

I realized there was only one way to do this.

I closed my eyes tight and then reopened them with a frown, “so do I now you owe you my life because of that? Neil I need you to stop going after me like some type of puppet.”

I said it genuinely, but it was meaningless. I was used to him hating me, so him showing this affection was very foreign to me. And I knew he was only going to get into more danger if he kept being involved with me. I was truly grateful but I needed him to hate me. To stay how he was, I didn’t I could bear the sight of him covered in blood one more time, or the person after me shifting Neil to being their target because of how much he was getting in the way.

“I don’t want to have to see you in my life again. Please, let’s just go back to the way things were before. I don’t want to have anything to do with you.”

“I spoke to the nurse, and they said we can get you discharged with a few medications that will keep you healthy until we get there. I rushed back here as fast I could, all your things are packed and ready, we just need you to-”

“Are you okay?” he said after noticing how quiet I was.

I nodded at him.

“Don’t worry, we’ll be fine, okay?” Max came to stand next to me, wrapping his arms around me, “nothing will happen to you or Helen.”

After that, the hospital discharged me, and I changed back into my regular clothes that Max had brought for me.

I got home, and I saw Helen. All of our things were already packed.

I couldn’t believe it, this was our reality,everything I had built was suddenly crumbling before me.

I lingered in Helen’s arms, loving the comfort that came with hugging her. She seemed so small and fragile and peaceful.

“Oh, my beautiful baby, how are you?”

They thought that someone had managed to penetrate into this building while we were here together. It was terrifying for me. We had the best security team ever, so I just didn’t understand how it was possible.

She got out of my hands.

“I’m here now, nothing is going to happen to you, okay? Mommy’s going to make sure you’re safe, I promise.”

She nodded at me with a smile.

“Mommy, are we going somewhere?”

“Somewhere safe, it’s kind of like a vacation?” I got to my feet, taking her hand in mine and walking to the room to see if -Max had left anything behind.

“What about school, Mommy? You said I was gonna start school very soon.” Her voice sounded sad, she stared at me with a sad pour, her face reminding me of Neil’s.

“And you will. Just take it as a vacation with Mommy, and you’ll get to see me every day.”

“Seriously? No work?”

“Yes, love.”

I hated that I was lying to her. But it was better than having her terrified.

Riele, Max’s mother stared at me with a smile, full of understanding. I saw her watching us from a corner of the mansion, all dressed and ready to leave.

“Thank you so much for everything you’ve been doing for us. I really cannot appreciate you enough.” I walked towards her with a sigh.

“I’m sad that you have to leave the comfort of your home,” I told her. Everyone was being discomforted because of me.

“No, of course. I’d love to come with you. You know I cannot do without Helen. She’s really like my granddaughter. We’ve begged Max for years to give me a granddaughter, and then you came into my life. I feel so relieved.”
