Chapter 33
Chapter 33
The paramedics strapped us into separate units as we headed to the hospital in the ambulance, but the whole time I could only think about Neil.
Tears streamed down my cheeks for the first time in a long time as I stared at his blood stained body.
I was still trembling from the shock of how fast everything had happened.
“Ma’am, you are also not in good condition. We need to take care of you as well,” they said as I struggled to reach for him. I was calling his name, but he couldn’t hear me.
They asked for my emergency contact, and I had given them Max’s number.
It felt like forever, but we finally got to the hospital.
We were taken into separate rooms. I hadn’t sustained many injuries from the impact, but Neil was completely unrecognizable. It’s a wonder he even managed to hold on long enough to carry me.
They rushed him into the intensive care unit while I was taken into the emergency room.
I struggled to stay awake, but eventually, I gave in.
By the time I opened my eyes, Max was already there, sitting by my bedside. He was holding my hand, his face a mixture of relief and worry.
“Leah? Are
“Wake?” he asked softly.
I looked around me with a wince, my head was trying to picture where I was and why I was here and then the memory flooded back.
I had been screaming no one repeat when I saw Neil’s car suddenly stop in front of me, there was no other land to swerve to. Id closed my eyes tight as my windshield completely shattered, and his car indented from the impact.
“Where’s Neil?” I gasped.Where is he? I need to see him now!” I swallowed, afraid he would tell me he’d passed away.
I tried to get up, but Max immediately moved to stop me. “Where are you going? You’re not allowed to walk.”
“Where is he?” I demanded.
By now, I was wrapped in a hospital gown and hooked up to various monitors and IVs, but I didn’t care.
“Alright, alright,” Max relented, assisting me to my feet. “But he’s still asleep. His family came here earlier. I’ll take you to him, but you need to be careful.”
“Just point me to where he is,” I insisted.
“He’s in the intensive care unit. They had to perform minor surgery to remove shards of glass from his skin. But he’s stable now, so don’t worry. He hasn’t regained consciousness yet,” Max explained, his voice filled with worry. “Leah, I’m so worried about you. This means someone is still after you. We investigated and found that your brakes had been tampered with They didn’t fail on their own.”
“What?” I whispered, my eyes widening in shock.
Max nodded gravely. “He was right. The person after you is still out there.”
Heart pounding, I pushed past him and barged into Neil’s room. I froze as soon as I entered. His family was gathered around his bed. His mother was sobbing quietly, while Ella knelt beside him, clutching his hand tightly.

Chapter 33
They all turned to look at me as I stepped into the room. Neil’s mother’s tear–streaked face immediately hardened into a glare, She stood and marched over to me, her voice trembling with anger.
“How dare you?” she hissed, slapping me hard across the face.
I held my affected cheek and she raised her hand to hit me again when max stepped between us.
He held her hand with a frown, pushing her out of my way, “one more hand on her and you’ll have to deal with the fucking consequences,” he warned her before holding my shoulders to inspect if I was wounded.
Ella followed. “Mother, I told you. This girl has been a disdain ever since she came to our life. We need to arrest her. Neil has been getting in trouble just because of her. He was shot the other day because of her, and now he took the accident for her. How long should we let her meddle with our life? She came and arrested me in a public event that made the news, and now she’s doing this again. Get out of this room. I don’t want to see you. If I ever see you here, I’m going to get arrested.”
“Neil, I need to know if he’s fine.” I mumbled under my breath, all the words they were saying literally floating into nowhere.
I ignored them, trying to push past them, but they immediately shoved me aside.
“How dare you? Don’t you see that I’m talking to you? You came here, bossing us around, and look what you’ve done to my son. How much fatal damage are you going to do to him before it is enough for you? You need to take your leave now. Nobody wants you here. Nobody wants to see you. Nobody wants to be around you. Just take your leave, Leah. Please, don’t cause us any more damage.”
I opened my mouth to say something. Then we heard groaning sounds coming from behind us. We all turned in Neil’s direction. He scrunched his face, pushing one arm to his head like he was having a headache, and groaned as he struggled to sit up.
Ella rushed to his side. “Neil, oh my goodness, you’re awake. Just stay on the bed. You don’t need to stand up.”
He groaned, shoving her aside. She almost lost her balance.
“Where is Leah?” he said in a low voice.
“Leah?” he called, looking around fanatically. His eyes stopped where I was. Immediately, he panicked.
“Leah, where is-” his voice faltered.
Immediately, he began unhooking the Ivs that were strapped to him.
Ella rushed out, m, “Neil, what are you doing? You’re not supposed to get up!.”
He immediately rushed to where I was, pulling me by my wrists and clutching me in his arms tightly, pressing my head to
his chest.
“You’re fine. You’re fine. That’s all that matters.”
While everyone turned to us with dropped jaws.
