Chapter 31
Chapter 31
For the first time in a long time, I went to check on the garden. The gardeners were busy there. I knew that Max had cut some staff out.
I hated how everything was going. I felt so bored and lonely.
I headed back into the house and arranged a Zoom meeting with some of my workers at the company. I had also tightened security there just to keep my staff safe and 1 ensured that those who did not need to come to work were staying away.
I was in a genuine shock that this was even able to happen at all because we had managed to increase security on every aspect.
So I thought that the team would pay more attention. The police had promised to get more information out of Ella. I knew she was psycho but not to this extent.
After a while, I felt extremely bored. I got to my feet. “I don’t think I’ll do this anymore,* I thought, and decided to go to a bar nearby since Helen was asleep.
I needed to get the fresh air. I had to hug Helen in bed before heading out. I wanted a simple look, something that wasn’t as flashy as I was used to. I hid my blue hair under a hat, taking note to dye it back to black to reduce the attention. *Nah,* I shook my head at my mirror. I loved my blue hair.
After wearing a crop top paired with baggy jeans, I proceeded to leave the house. When I got to the bar, it was scanty. I looked around carefully. I knew I should feel relieved now that we had caught Ella behind bars. But a part of me just couldn’t deal with it. It was really annoying.
“What would you like to drink?” the bartender asked me with a smile on his face.
I shook my head at him. “Your strongest alcohol, anything that can just take my mind off…” I trailed off, dreading the realization that I had driven here. “Ugh, never mind. Give me your best non–alcoholic wine, something that still hits the spot.”
“I’ll take a bottle of non–alcoholic wine,” someone called next to me.
I froze in place as I heard that all too familiar voice. I closed my eyes, cringing. I turned to look, and Neil was standing next
to me.
He turned to look at me for a little bit, but then my eyes widened at the intense hatred that he had for me, and it was so glaring on his face.
I didn’t care. It was all his fault for walking back into my life.
I turned back to look at the bartender who had served my drink, and I took his stool right there to sit. “Great, I can’t even escape this man, even when I come here. This is really the most frustrating thing I’ve had to deal with in such a long time,“I thought. Not glancing my way for once he headed to a different section of the room.
I looked around me at the other elites who were enjoying their drinks. “Must be good to not have your life be sought after huh?”
I picked my phone to check the time. It was past eleven. “How long have I been here? I wondered. I got to my feet, deciding to take my leave.
I started my car, taking a sigh and deciding to head back home. I was barely halfway through my journey when Max called.
“What’s up?” I said, without taking my eyes off the road.
“Nothing, just checking in on you.”

Chapter 31
“It’s literally almost twelve midnight. Shouldn’t you be asleep?”
“We just ended the meeting after the whole day, and I thought I hadn’t spoken with you today, so…”
“Oh, I told you not to worry about me and just focus on work. Don’t worry, I’m fine,” I replied.
“Why is it kind of loud there? Are you listening to something?”
I pressed my lips into a tight line. I knew I shouldn’t have picked up I should have pretended to be asleep.
I rolled my eyes, knowing he would flip if he found out I had left the house, despite him telling me not to. After thinking about it a few more times, I finally decided to tell him the truth.
“So… I might have gone out for a bit.”
“What?” he raised his voice. “Why do you never listen? Why? Why?”
“It’s just… I got bored, okay? I’m tired. I’m heading back home now.”
“What did you even do?”
“I wanted to have a drink. But then-”
“Leah,” he cut me off, “we had so many drinks back at home!”
“I know, but I just needed some fresh air and everything,” I snapped.
“Leah, you need to stay in that room. This is not the time.” I heard shuffling sounds in the background and I didn’t want to picture how upset he probably looked. I’d be mad at me too.
“Ella is literally behind bars-”
“Yes, but we don’t know what crazy things she’s done or who else she might have…”
“That’s enough,” I said firmly. “I’m heading back home, okay?”
I frowned as I continued driving. Suddenly, I gasped as a reckless bike driver crossed in front of me. I slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting them, but the car didn’t stop. Instead, the panicked bike driver swerved out of my way, nearly falling off.
“Shit.”
“What was that about? What’s wrong?” Max asked over the phone.
“It’s nothing,” I said, I frowned, trying to hit the brakes again.
“Oh my God. I think my brakes aren’t working,” my eyes widened at the realization, my grip around the steering wheel suddenly tightening.
“What?” Max shouted. “No, no…”
“I’m about to merge into the highway. What do i do?!” I panicked, “my brakes aren’t working!”
