Chapter 3

Neil’s pov

The moment I heard Ella scream for help, I’d jumped into that pool with my whole being. I would never have thought in a million years that Leah was in there too.

It wasn’t until I saw one of my mother’s guest attempting to jump after her that my eyes found her.

A wave of intense panic rushed through my body and I hurried to my feet, not caring that I’d tossed Ella away from me, I pulled the strange man back and dived into the pool after her, for some reason, the thought of another man even lifting her in his arms horrified me.

Her eyes were closed and when I pressed her head to my chest, she seemed to be barely breathing.

My terrified hands rolled my sleeves up as I laid her on the floor, yelling for everyone to move aside, as I pressed my hands hard against her chest. I never felt this tense before, not even when I found out Ella, the woman of my dreams, wasn’t the woman at the altar that night.

“Leah…” I panicked, closing my mouth over hers before asking for the emergency.

“How did this fucking happen?!” I snapped at Ella who had walked to my side. She flinched, her eyes going wide. I’d never raised my voice at her, ever.

“Neil that witch, she pushed me into the pool for no reason, I was just-”

“Bullshit!” I raised my voice, raking panicked fingers through my hair, “Leah can’t fucking swim, she’s been terrified of water ever since her mother, she would never do that.”

Ella had stayed quiet the whole time we rushed down to the hospital.

I’d been nothing but worried the entire time, so to listen to her spew about divorce, I was confused.

“What?” I pocketed my hands, shifting my attention from the man whose presence angered me for some reason.

“I want a divorce,” Leah repeated the words, making it known I’d heard her right.

“She just stated that she wants nothing to do with you,” the man suddenly contributed, causing my eyes to shift back to him.

My brows pulled together in a frown, “and who on earth are you?!”

I watched as he pulled out a card from his pocket, “Max Winston, a lawyer with very impressive connections with the police, so if you keep bothering her, I wouldn’t mind placing a few calls right now.”

My frown deepened and I decided I didn’t have the time for his bullshit, my only focus was Leah and trying to understand what she was saying so I looked back at her.

“Let’s get out of here, you should be on the hospital bed-” as I reached to hold her hand, she repelled. My heart dropped and for the first time ever, the love that was always in her eyes for me was gone, nothing but resentment in them.

I never cared what Leah thought about me, I did my part, played the good husband role and I did make it clear that I would never see her as my wife, feeling played by her family who had replaced the woman of my dreams. So I truly didn’t care about her, at least that’s what I thought.

Because now watching her take a step back, her blonde hair in a disheveled mess, her pale face, looking even paler with the sadness in her eyes, it infuriated me. I was angered, not by her, but myself, because I couldn’t figure out what was upsetting

her.

“Don’t contact me, Neil, my lawyer will be in touch,” she said, turning around to leave. Max stared at me briefly before following behind her.

“I’m not going to let you go with a fucking stranger!” I tried to stop her when she retorted, raising her voice at me.

“What is it to you?! You’ve acted like I never existed for four years, you left me alone at our anniversary dinner to hang out with Ella, so don’t pretend to care now, I’m giving you what you always wanted, your freedom, take it, leave me Neil.”

I closed my eyes. Fuck. The dinner. I’d forgotten all about it.

“The doctors need to know you’re-” I couldn’t finish my words, she was out of sight.

I hated that a strange man was going around with my wife and I immediately headed back to the hospital room to get my phone.

“Oh thank goodness he’s here,” my mom rolled her eyes in my direction, “Neil, Ella has a cold and you instead go after that ungrateful witch.”

I briefly glanced at Ella who was standing in a corner, a pout on her lips.

I felt like this was her fault. When I saw the news that she was back, I wanted to see her, all these years, I couldn’t move on from the fact she abandoned me at the altar but when she’d called me she was here, I thought I was the man all those years back who cared for her but when I saw her tonight, it was all gone. I felt absolutely nothing.

Hurrying out of the hospital grounds, I placed my phone to my ear, “get me everything you can on Max Winston,” I told my

assistant.

“Yes sir,” he said.

I hopped into my car and headed home, I needed to explain to Leah, I didn’t know what I was going to say but I was going to say it.

As soon as I got to the family mansion, I hurried to her bedroom door, I stood there, pondering on what to say when one of the house workers walked up to me shakily.

“What is it?” I frowned.

“The madam asked me to give this to you,” she said in a low voice.

I took the file in her hands and read the words, ‘divorce agreement‘

“Okay Leah, this has gone too far–” I turned her doorknob, walking into the bedroom but I was cut short by how everything had been tossed over, all her clothes were gone.
