Chapter 28
Chapter 28
Neil pov
I looked up from the address in my hand and then up at the cabin, it seemed to match the place I’d been told to check out
I had moved my things to the hotel on the island that Ella had booked out for us so I was far behind on the project by now,
I frowned when I realised the fire starting from the outside.
“What the fuck?” I stepped forward, looking at the lock on the door.
And I was about to call emergency when I heard the voice coming from inside
“Help, help me?” The screams for help were accompanied by loud banging noises on the door.
I froze in place, I would recognise that voice anywhere
“Leah?” I called, my eyes going wide, “Leah what are you doing in there?!”
“I came here to inspect for the project and someone locked me in!”
“What?!” I couldn’t believe my ears, “Leah I told you not to come out here that someone was out here for your
I called the emergency while searching for something to break the door open with.
“Someone already informed us we are on our way!” They had said.
“Leah?” I called, noticing how quiet she had gone.
I couldn’t think of anything else but her. continue to hit against the door, not caring that it was starting to scar me.
“Just hang in there, okay, Leah? I’m coming. I promise.”
I caught on to my voice, picking up a huge stone and ramming it against the lock. By now, the smoke was starting to fill my nose, and I was coughing, which made me feel even more scared, wondering how she was doing in there.
“Leah, can you hear me? Please answer me.”
She was not speaking. My head was coated with sweat by now. I hit the stone against the lock as hard as I could, and eventually, it fell off. I barged into the door, basically throwing it off its hinges. I put my hand around my nose, trying to see if I could find her.
There was a barricade of fallen, burning wood between her and the way out, and she seemed to be unconscious.
“Leah!” I screamed at the top of my voice, dropping to my knees, pushing the fire out of my way. I lifted her in my arms. She was completely unconscious. I pressed her head against my chest and, with shaky hands, pulled out my phone.
The emergency services were already here.
“Hurry, take her,” I commanded them, barely able to get the words out.
Thank God.
They had contacted her emergency contact by now and I knew her husband would be here.

I didn’t think it was safe here for her anymore. I just knew somebody was still on her track.
I decided to head back to the hotel room to get my things, I was going to leave with her.
Leah pov
I had been unconscious for hours, slipping in and out despite multiple treatments.
Just when the darkness threatened to pull me under again, I felt a dull ache in my body and let out a groan. My eyelids fluttered open.
“Can you hear me?” His voice was urgent, and the warmth of his hand wrapped around mine.
I blinked, pressing my hand against my forehead as I tried to process where I was. My gaze moved around the unfamiliar
room.
“Where am I?”
“The hospital. We managed to get here in time, thank God.” I looked up and saw that Max was next to me.
The hospital? My mind raced, trying to remember what had happened. A sharp pain pulsed through my skull as I shifted.
“What happened?” I groaned, attempting to sit up, “when did you get here?” I frowned, revealing I was on the island, “why are you here?”
“Don’t.” He reached for me, gently pushing me back down. “You need to rest. Just stay there.”
And then it hit me. The fire. The suffocating heat. The thick smoke burning my throat.
“Someone set the warehouse on fire.”
He nodded, his grip tightening slightly around my hand.
“But don’t worry,” he reassured me. “The detective said there was a camera around the area, and whoever did it was really careless. If it’s the same man who’s been tormenting you…”
“Neil was right,” I gasped. “He told me… he hadn’t been caught yet.”
He didn’t say anything, but I could see it in his face, he believed me now.
“But don’t worry,” he repeated. “They’re very efficient. We’ll get the footage, and we’ll get him arrested. If he’s followed you this far, Leah, there’s no telling what he can do.”
I swallowed hard as he sat beside me on the bed, still holding my hand. There was something in his eyes, something distant, like he was remembering something painful.
He shook his head. “I don’t know.”
I frowned at his sudden shift, watching as he seemed to battle something internally.
“Fine,” I said, cutting through the silence. “We will figure it out.”
He nodded in
agreement.
Without hesitation, he pulled out his phone, making one call after another. He was already making arrangements, ensuring my move, my safety. It all happened so fast, and I barely had time to process it before he returned to the room.
“I’ll talk to the shareholders,” he said. “They’ve already figured out what happened today, so they’ll let you leave early. After we leave the hospital, you can head to my place.”

“Fine,” I agreed, nodding again.
I wasn’t sure why I was going along with this so easily, but I was too exhausted to argue. Before I could think about it further, a nurse stepped into the room.
“Sir,” she said, “the detective is back from the police station. He says they have the footage.”
Not long after, the detective walked in carrying a laptop.
He nodded at him. “If you want me to show you another time, that would be fine, but we’ve caught who was behind it.”
“Oh, great!” he exclaimed. “We just need to seize this footage and send it to my team. They’ll track him down wherever he is.”
The detective frowned. “What’s that? The culprit is a woman.”
“A woman?” His voice was filled with shock.
My brow furrowed. “What do you mean, a woman?”
“I think you need to watch the clip yourself,” the detective said, placing the laptop on the bed beside me.
The second the footage played, my blood turned ice cold. The figure on the screen was unmistakable, cautiously looking left and right, carrying a canister of gasoline. Then, a flicker of a matchstick. The door clicking shut.
Ella.
Ella was the one who had tried to burn me alive.
