Chapter 26
I was in shock as I stared at him. That was last thing I expected him to say.
He continued to stare at me, I blinked multiple times, trying to understand what I’d heard him say.
I didn’t know what was drawing me in, but after a while, I managed to break free from it.
“Okay,” I shook my head fast, pulling my hand free from his grip, and swimming back from him, “it’s clear you’re running on low sleep. I stepped out of the water. I hoped something like this would never happen again.
“Well, that would be on you,” he said so casually, coming out after me.
I walked ahead of him as we headed back to the room, I lay in bed, trying to wave it off my mind.
Even when we were married, he never said anything like that, so why now? Neil would never even look at me, let alone tell me he was hard? What the fuck? I kept thinking as I continued to process it.
I turned, seeing him laying on his side, his back to me and I rolled my eyes with a frown. I was as good as a stranger to him, I was used to men swooning over me endlessly but even then he had Ella, if he couldn’t respect the love of his life, who knew what disrespectful things he must have done when he was with me.
I shuddered as the feeling of disgust immediately overwhelmed me.
“Men,‘ I mumbled under my breath. It finally slipped out of my mind and I drew in to sleep.
The next morning, we got a message that we were supposed to go around the village on this island to make inquiries.
“What are you doing?” Neil asked me when I shuffled out of bed around six in the morning.
“I need to go take a shower. I know some people here cheated their way to get into a hotel, but that’s just dumb. I would rather do what he wants us to do. Who knows if he set someone to watch us?”
“But it’s literally six in the morning, do you really have to go now?” His voice sounded deep, heaving with sleep, and I felt a minor shiver run down my spine from it. Somebody else would have found it attractive, but not me, I knew the devil behind the mask.
“Excuse me, I’m not asking you to come with me.” I attempted to get to my feet but he stood in front of me, hovering above
- me.
“After what happened yesterday, don’t you think you should wait until it’s a bit brighter?” He pocketed his hands. The sunrise was beaming into the room and the way it casted against his face made me think he looked really heavenly.
“I decide what I want to do, okay? You’re not my babysitter on this trip,” I moved him out of my way with a single shove.
I heard him grumble as I walked away. I cleaned up and wore a large t–shirt that belonged to Max and a pair of black shorts. My hair was up in a butterfly clip.
Neil followed behind me.
“Following me again?”
“So, what do you plan on doing today?” he asked.
“Well, since my major project is designing clothes here, I’m going to see elements that I can implement to make them stand out. That is something I think can impress Mr. Bandy. So yeah, that’s what I’m gonna do. What about you?”

“Well, I was supposed to go to the construction site. Our team is working on building new structures for the project, so that’s that. Going around to see different construction sites”
“Ooh, I could double that I could see the type of clothes that they need, and then we can implement them into our design process.” I clicked my tongue, “that makes sense. Let’s go together?
“Wait, really?” he said, clearly surprised.
And I simply nodded.
“Alright,” he sounded almost relieved at my suggestion.
We had both changed into construction site outfits once we got there, and Neil would not take his eyes off me. He continued to stare like I was about to disappear from sight.
“Woah, this is crazy.” I pointed out as I watched the team in action, “this is how it works.”
I put my hands on my waist. “I think I’m going to get interested in construction. Should I extend my brand to doing that?”
“I thought you said you designed clothes.”
“I do, but… I don’t know. This is a big way to expand.”
“Well, it’s dangerous work. I found that out in, woah-”
He held my arm to pull me out of the way before I knocked into someone carrying materials in the other direction.
“Because of things like this, it’s not a fancy shopping site,” he said, a frown on his face.
“Woah, this is interesting.” I ignored him, looking around at the men as they worked. I noticed they were building a mall in this small village, and it was owned by Mr. Bandy.
“This is going to do really great numbers,” I said. “Alright. Anyways, woah, what is that?”
I stepped onto a stool, but I wasn’t paying attention. I had no idea some broken pieces of concrete were falling from the ceiling. In an attempt to dodge it, I missed a step but thankfully Neil caught me in time.
“Okay, we need to get out of here,” he said, securing me tightly against his body.
“What are you doing? Put me down!”
“I don’t trust you not to try to kill yourself.”
At first, I tried to struggle, but he was stronger. Eventually, I gave in as he carried me out of the construction site in a bridal style.
“Okay, now we’re outside. Will you put me down?” I yelled into his face.
But his attention wasn’t on me anymore. His eyes widened like he had seen a ghost as he fixed them on something ahea‘ of
- us.
I turned my head to look, only to find Ella standing at the bottom of the site, her jaw dropped as she stared on us, and a devil’s glare in her eyes.
