He stared at me like I was the dunew thing ret, and the indunard me. The last thing 1 weed was to be in front of this man that I rented with all of my heart, and to have him judge me.
“That man,” he pointed a finger in the direction of the down. We diversction. They want you to think that they aren’t on your trail anymore. And so he’s put doing that to distract you, and you’re clearly taking the base?
1 opened my mouth to speak when his phone started to ring, He didn’t peel his eyes off me.
“Your phone is ringing m. I raised my eyebrows, speaking in a mocking tone but he ignored it.
“Don’t be that oblivious. You’ve built such a big brand. Do you really believe that the person trying to take you down would give up so easily?
“Comments like that are not uncommon, I’ve dealt with jealon customers in the past, even crazier ones, it comes with the job will you not take your phone? It’s starting to annoy me My eyes shifted into a frown.
Just then, we heard her voice, her phone pressed to her ear as she walked out of the restaurant.
“Where on earth has Neil gone, and why is he ignoring my call? Ella was saying until she spotted us. Her eyes widened as she stood in place, dumbfounded, and I wished I could have taken a picture of the way her face paled as soon as she saw us together.
My lips curled into a smirk, “looks like you have bigger things to worry about,” I almost laughed, the mockery evident in my
tone.
“Worry about your wife and leave my life alone, I folded my arms across my chest, turning to leave when Ella reached for my hand to stop me.
“Why are you trying to come back into our lives?” Her voice was shaky and couldn’t hold a proper threat, “you’re a slut now and you’re trying to come for our peace! Following us wherever we go.”
I trailed my eyes from her quivering lips to her hand holding mine, “I think you should talk to your man, he’s the one who seems to be obsessed with me, I pulled free from her hold, my shoulder harshly brushing against hers before I disappeared from their sight.
I headed back into the restaurant. When I got there, Max was waiting for me.
“Hey, is everything okay?” he asked as soon as I took my seat, his eyes tracking my every movement.
I forced a smile, trying to act like I was unbothered by what Neil had just said.
“Everything is fine,” I told him. “I’m just a little bit worried. Can you confirm with the cops that the man is truly the culprit?”
“Of course he is. The police even found the gun that he had used at the party, and it matched everything on the CCTV. It’s him. He really did turn himself in because he’s mentally unstable. Don’t worry, you’re safe. They also tried to see if there were any accomplices, but everything seemed to be a solo mission.”
“Of course.” I smiled. “Let’s just eat our food and get out of here.”
“Why?” Max asked.

“Trust me, you don’t want to know.” I rolled my eyes.
Soon enough, we were back home.
“I’m glad you decided to come with me on this little date,” Max said once we pulled up to the mansion.
“Friendship date,” I reminded him.
“Of course,” he smiled. After they’d said the culprit was caught, we had decided to go out and celebrate.
“Well, thank you so much. It really meant everything to me,” he said. I’m glad you gave me the chance to be in your life that day.”
“I should be grateful to you,” I stepped in closer.
“You saved me from that pool when I was drowning. No one else cared, Max. Just you. And I feel indebted to you. You brought me into this nice mansion, helped me with the right connections, the right investors to build my brand. I feel so glad.”
“Oh, stop saying that. You did it all by yourself. None of those people knew that you were connected to me. You worked hard to get those investors on your side. All of that was you. Why are you giving me credit? You’ve been a strong woman.”
“But I wouldn’t have gotten here without you, Max,” I said.
“So, do I get a hug for that?”
He spread his arms and raised his eyebrows.
“Of course,” I nodded.
I wrapped my arms around him in a hug. Once we separated to go to our rooms, I headed into the bedroom that I currently shared with my daughter. I carefully opened the door, and she seemed to be fast asleep, changed into her pajamas thanks to Max’s mother.
I leaned into the bed, and she immediately stirred.
“Hi, Mommy.”
She stretched, her voice sleepy was accompanied with a yawn.
“Did I wake you up, baby?”
“Nope,” she shook her head fast. “I was waiting for you to come back home.”
I immediately wrapped her in a hug.
“Did you have fun with Uncle Max?”
“Yeah, of course we did.”
“Yay, great! Mommy, should we have a fun bathtime like we used to?”
“Of course, of course.”
I didn’t mind that it was almost midnight. Whatever she wanted, I was willing to give her. Helen was my everything, and I
would sacrifice a lot for her.
And that was how I started to prepare the bath for us.

“So, did you go out on a date?” she asked as I prepared the water.
It was fun. It was more like we just went out to eat and all.”
“Okay, Mommy. You’ve been very busy these days.”

My heart shattered at the thought of that. I hated not devoting my time to my daughter, and I couldn’t wait to take a break from work so I could focus only on her.
“I’m sorry. That’s why I took you to the mall yesterday,” I said, pulling out her favourite soaps and bath bombs.
I remembered how she had run off and the memory caused a frown to settle on my face.
“And then you did something so scary.”
Her little face blushed as we turned the tap on to fill the bathtub.
“I will never do that again.”
“Thank you.”
After a while, we both stepped into the water, enjoying the warm bubble bath. The room was silent for a while until she suddenly spoke.
“Mommy, where’s daddy?”
