Chapter 12
Chapter 12
At first I was in awe, being so up and close with the man I had been obsessed with. I craned my neck up to meet his gaze, there was barely any emotion. I was reminded of how obsessed I’d been with him and just like that, my face shifted into a frown, another reminder flashed in my head, I realized just how equally I resented him.
“What do you think you’re doing?” I shoved his chest backwards, attempting to move but he stopped me, placing both his hands at the sides of my head, trapping me between the wall and his body.
He smelled like heaven, and that pissed me off.
“You have to come with me,” he said, still no expression on his face.
“What do you take me for? The same slag all those years ago? You could just boss around?”
“Leah…” I noticed the small shift in his gaze but it barely lasted, “I looked around for you–”
“Why did you follow me?” I immediately cut him off.
“You have to leave now,” despite his unchanging attitude, I almost sensed worry in his tone.
My eyebrows shifted together, “what?“.
“I think someone is here for you,” he said. I stared at him, wondering if he was being paranoid after what happened at the funeral.
“I don’t think that’s possible, this is a high level event, the security is extremely tight and-”
“One of the security men is not real, I overheard him on the phone, just come with me and-” he sought to hold my hand but I dodged him in time.
“If you’re right, then I’ll leave with Max and inform my security team,” I told him in a straight tone, “but if I find out you’re lying,” I inched closer even though there was barely any space between us. I was so close, I felt my boobs against his chest. I
raised a brow, re lying, I’ll not only end your career, and make sure you never work with these shareholders, but I’ll
finally ruin the Devon family, and give them what they deserved all those years ago.”
With that, I turned to head back into the hall. He actively followed behind me but I ignored his presence. I wanted him to know, to feel how unimportant he was to me now.
“Where were you?” Max called once he spotted me, “I was starting to worry-” he trailed off when he spotted Neil standing behind me.
“Does anything seem off?” I asked him instead.
“No, why?”
“That lying son of a bitch, I swear I-” I trailed off at the sudden loud murmuring that filled the entire hall.
I furrowed my eyebrows trying to make out their words but nothing made sense, “what’s going on?” I frowned at Max.
“I don’t know but I think we should get out of here,” he started to say, reaching to hold my hand when I felt a tug in the opposite direction.
Neil had intertwined our hands and was pulling me out of the hall, fast.
“What the hell are you–”
“We have to leave, now,” he said in a calm tone. In fact, too calm.

He hastily pulled out his car keys as we headed into the parking lot.
I noticed a few people might have gotten the same idea because they were slowly starting to scramble around.
Neil opened the passenger door of his black SUV.
“I’m not getting in, you’re a stranger to me, and until I get an explanation, I’m not-”

“We don’t have time!” He raised his voice, startling me, but not enough to make me flinch. He lowered his tone, “I’ll explain on the way but please just trust me.”
I closed my eyes tight. I didn’t want to leave with him, to be reminded of a past that haunted me but I didn’t want to risk my life either, if he truly knew something, then it was the better option to go with him.
Reluctantly, I stepped into the passenger seat. My breath seized when he leaned over me, to secure me in the seatbelt. I wasn’t sure why.
He hurried to the driver’s side and hit the acceleration pedal, driving us out of there at an insane speed.
“Will you finally tell me what’s going on?”
“What did you do Leah?” His deep voice asked in a commanding tone, “what have you been up to? Why is someone after you?”
“None of these concern you, drop me off at the Estate gate, I’ll call Max,” I said, reaching into my purse for my phone, “he will take things from there.”
必
I let out a gasp when he snatched my phone from my grip, slightly focusing on the road, while turning it off, “you can’t, you can’t use your phone. It might be tracked.”
“What?! What the fucking hell is going on?!”
I noticed his grip around the wheel tighten as he sped through the road. We were starting to drive beyond familiar places I recognised and soon enough, there were no cars left on the road with us, miles of grassland on both sides of the road.
That’s when I realised I knew nothing about this man except how much he hated me, if he was taking me somewhere to have me delivered to killers, I would literally not know.
Thinking abou
it, no one had a motive for my death except his family.
“If you’re ” I started but was unable to finish, his knuckles were white and his veins seemed like they were about to pop. He seemed to be trying his best to stay strong. That was when I noticed it, the blood slowly soaking up his white shirt, it was the same spot he’d been shot last week.
“Pull over,” I stated in a shock tone, almost leaving my seat until the seat belt restricted me.
Instead, he increased his speed.
“Fucking pull over!” I raised my voice this time, my eyes widening at the blood staining his shirt.
“Not now,” he said through gritted teeth, “we are almost there.”
“Have you lost your fucking mind?! Where are we going?”
But he didn’t stop.
Neil continued to drive, finally halting in the middle of nowhere. He stopped the car, taking controlled breaths. As if to worsen things, there was an instant drizzle from the skies.

Chapter 12
He leaned over to help me out of my seatbelt before unstrapping himself.
“Where on earth are we?” I looked around me, we were surrounded by nothing but trees for miles, the sound of birds chirping and the drum of rain on the leaves.
“Where is this?” I snapped, “you’re fucking hurt, and now it’s raining, where have you brought me to and-”
He cut me off, slinging one arm around my shoulder to support his weight. With his other hand, he pointed to the distance in front of us, “there’s a cabin over there, I have a first aid kit,” it felt like he was breathing every word with how many slight gasps for air he seemed to be taking every second.

“We have to go there,” he said in a low voice before turning to meet my gaze, “no one will be able to hurt you there, I’ll be by your side.”
