Chapter 15

The red moon. Crimson. Similar to the blood that will be shared in a Pack acceptance ceremony

Legends has it that the Moon Goddess has one birthed a King who will rule the entire werewolf kingdom–the one wh be the eyes and mind of the Goddess herself whilst seated on the throne she has provided him, that was the legends.

However, along the way, upon falling in love with a mortal lie was not destined or mated with, the King the Goddess has looked up to has become corrupted.

Devoid of any wisdom she has bestowed and therefore has taken a different turn to the golden path the Moon Goddess had

in mind.

“It has turned red!”

“The myth was true!”

“The Goddess does not accept!”

The Omega’s pleas and murmurs didn’t go unnoticed as they swallow the entire training field with shock and some having mixed reactions. In the myth, the Goddess, or should we call her Selene, decided to express her anger to the people by having the Moon turn as crimson as the blood the King and his bride will share on their wedding night.

You could say it’s eerily similar to Mother–in–Laws who aren’t in favor of the simple commoner their beloved son has chosen

This legend has become a basis in knowing whether or not a pack member will be accepted in a pack yet it has been rare to have happened, except tonight perhaps.”

Thank Goodness that bastard Kallias isn’t here to see this. He would have pleaded his father that the crimson moon is enough reason to kick Enoch out of the pack

The metal clinks on the ground as my sweaty palms slowly give up on holding onto it in shock. The Goddess is rejecting Enoch joining the Riverstone Pack.

I swallow the lump in my throat, looking at those innocent emerald eyes as they stare right back at me in question. He doesn’t know what is happening–none of us do.

I turn to the Gamma who is still gaping at the large ball of the sky. What is he going to do? Is he going to kick Enoch from the pack now that the Goddess clearly wouldn’t want to let him in?

“Taryn,” I turned to the gravelly voice as Enoch walked over to me. I bite the insides of my cheeks. “Bad?” Enoch murmured. studying my features and for once, I nodded. “It is bad, yeah.”

You might just have to leave now, big guy.

I exhaled the breath I didn’t know I was holding before bending down to pick up the bowl of wine I dropped

Moments ago, Enoch had the privilege to drink this for a toast of having one new member of the Riverstone Pack, as did I years ago when my brother and I were adopted then.

But I guess not anymore.

I just have to have him take some money and maybe give him the entire clothing collection I bought Kallias last year for

some clothes.

He might survive if he somehow lands himself a decent job to earn a couple of pennies in the market down at the unclaimed lands, that is if that stalker we had encountered then didn’t have his face blacklisted there.

Chapter 15

He’s going to leave now.

Somehow, a bitter taste is staining my tongue,

Maybe because you don’t want him to go. My wolf whispers at the back of my mind.

That’s true. Maybe I don’t.

I walk over to the Gamma, still standing in both utter awe and fear of getting a reaction from the deity we all have been looking up to. Let’s get this over with. “Gamma Ab-”

“Taryn.” I was cut off as he lowers his eyes from the sky and looks straight at me. “He’s going to stay.” He murmurs, so low 1 didn’t think I heard that right..

“I’m sorry, what now?”

Everyone immediately turned to the Gamma, clearly perplexed by his sudden decision. What is he? The King? Is he perhaps going against Selene, the Moon Goddess‘ decisions too?

“We never had a case like this, that kid is surely different, Taryn.” He turned to Enoch who, in a fucking stage, is playing with the wine bowl I just picked up. This man has no fucks to give, does he?

“Yeah, I brought a wild one is that’s what you’re asking.” I snort. I’m losing the seriousness of the situation and I’m blaming it on the Gamma’s contagious stupidness.

Scratching my head, I turn back to Enoch. “Are you serious? He’s staying?” I ask again.

He’s glorious in normalcy, gore in murder, and a goddamn baby ninety percent of the time.

The Gamma’s expression turned gloomy before he darts his gaze to the head maid standing amongst the crowd.

He gives her a swift nod, and as if they understood each other, the head maid commanded all the Omegas.

“Let us all head back to bed.” She declares, side eyeing me. Those eyes are enough to shift wind from north to south. A quiet reminder of what she told me earlier.

To get my boyfriend on a leash.

The moment the audience had retired to sleep, the Gamma walks towards Enoch with precision, as though approaching a wild animal.

In his case, I wouldn’t argue otherwise. “Enoch wasn’t it?” He softly calls. He places the golden bowl down before turning to me, boring sheer similarity to a boy’s first time going to the doctors and even looking at his mother when they ask his name.

I nodded at him, giving him a clear sign that the Gamma is good, and he nodded at Gamma Abel in return.

“He certainly seems fond of you, and only you, Taryn.” The Gamma murmurs from his shoulders and I scratched my nape, snorting. “That must be because I nursed him back to health back then in the forest.” I mutter.

“What? I thought he’s your boyfriend and he ran away from home to see you?” His eyes narrowed at me. Shit. Shit. Shit.

Are you dumb, Taryn?

“Ah, yes. What I meant was when he, you know, came here, he was injured so I nursed him back to health.” I smiled.

The Gamma didn’t press any further for the love of the Goddess, but he did raise his brows in suspicion before glancing back at Enoch.

“This man will be trained here. He will be useful inthe upcoming wars. So take better care of your boyfriend, Taryn He

nurmurs and was about to leave.

“It–but, Gamma!” I called and was about to walk towards him when Enoch pulled me back by the wrist, once more wrapping himself onto my waist.

“Didn’t the–didn’t the Moon Goddess reject him?” I stuttered. Silence reigned over us for a couple of minutes before his eyes slowly turned to me from his shoulder.

“The thing is, Taryn,” The Gamma starts off, picking up the dagger on the table and placing it on his belt.

My heart hammered in my chest, unable to determine why but somehow, I feel like his answer would either better or worsen whatever I had thought of this pack.

Because how can him–someone of higher position ignore the Goddess‘ commands?

“W–what is 10” 1 ask. Enoch’s grip tightened on my waist, pressing his head on the low of my back, still seated down.

“The moon turned crimson when you entered the pack too.”

My heart dropped to my stomach. What does he mean by

From what I remember, my old pack burned to the ground along with whatever remains of my family aside from me and my brother who survived the carnage.

There was no way I still have a pack I’m somehow connected too.

So how… how is it that I was rejected as well?

I turn back to Enoch and with shaky hands and a tear to stubborn to swallow falling, I pat his head, messing the hair I combed to perfection earlier when I had thought he’s finally going to step in as one of us.

But how can I assure someone that when I’m not even part of this pack in the first place?

“I guess we share the same fates, after all.”

Do we really both have a pack to go back to?

It’s three in the morning and I can still hear the rustling of pages. I sit up to see Enoch near the window, still not asleep.

“You’re pretty human–ic today. It’s human–like behavior to stay up, you know.” I murmur. He usually acts like a dog or a wild animal, sleeping on the ground beside my bed without much of a care in the world.

“Taryn thinks I’m bad too?” He murmurs, looking down at the book on the table. It’s the same royal book he borrowed from the library.

Ah, I can’t blame him for thinking that. No one just gets rejected off a pack without reason, and by a deity too. The greatest deity we worship.

A sigh leaves my lips as I walk over towards him, my fluffy slippers scratching the floor. “No, you’re not.” I smiled, pulling his head to my stomach in an embrace.

You moon–drunk, haunted, and pierced soul. We were all just survivors, you and me.

I glance back at the ball in the sky that seemed to have determined our fates and had us controlled in the palm of its hands,

From its monstrous shade of maroon, it has now shifted back to its glorious silver.

With both hands, I grab his face in my hands. “No one in this world decides who you are but you. You hear me?” I matter. He nods. In the hopes he gets it, a smile appears on my face.

He will get it.

And if you too don’t get to accept what you are. You set fire to yourself and destroy it.

But then again, how do you destroy a monster without becoming one?

Morning came with no Enoch in sight, at least just the book he read last night on my bedside table which tells me he fell asleep nonetheless.

Is he at the infirmary?

“Fuck, kick harder!”

“Is he gonna cry?”

“Someone who doesn’t belong here doesn’t get to touch equipment, got it?”

I turn to the window, the wild yells from the outside are definitely not the first thing I want to hear in the morning.

When you’re an Omega, I guess you simply have got to be used to the thin walls you’re given as a decent room.

1 slip onto my uniform, walking out of my room, and to the commotion coming from the training field. I spot an Omega walk by and plaster a smile on my face. Another day of trying to please my coworkers.
