Matthew’s words instantly drained the color from Asher’s face.
Upon hearing the word ‘engagement,‘ Lemira remembered that Asher indeed had a fiancée back in Orvin.
In both her past and present life, Asher seldom mentioned this matter.
So, the Waverlies‘ daughter was disabled. That explained why Asher always avoided the topic.
An infuriated Asher shot Matthew a glare. “You’re the last person who gets to lecture me.”
“Can’t stand your kind of people, always poking your noses where they don’t belong. What are you gonna do, bite me?”
Asher’s face turned a livid shade of purple, clearly at a loss for words against Matthew.
All he could do was to turn his gaze to Lemira, his expression a mix of frustration and disbelief. “I sure underestimated you.”
Evelina chimed in nonchalantly, “Lemmy here has always been quite popular, even Mr. Draven enjoys a good rapport with her, you know.”
Matthew’s face soured at that, interpreting it
a dig at Lemira’s personal life being a mess.
He whipped out his phone, offering to Evelina, “How about we exchange contacts?”
Evelina, flattered by the gesture, hurried to take out her phone.
Was Matthew finally seeing Lemira’s true colors?
But then, in the next second, Matthew retracted his phone. “Did you really think I wanted to add you on WhatsApp? Any guy can get your number, huh? Seems like your personal life is pretty lax.”
Evelina’s face froze, mortification written all over it.
Asher couldn’t help but intervene. “Mr. Everhart, that’s a bit harsh, don’t you think?”
“After that innocent act, implying Lemira’s personal life is a mess because she knows a lot of guys? As if I couldn’t see right through that. I just proved my point; she’s the one leading that kind of life, thinking everyone’s just like her.”
Matthew’s words were sharp as knives.
Evelina was left in tears.
Why did all the Everhart men have to be so venomous?
Lemira, listening to Matthew’s tirade, couldn’t help but feel uplifted. His way of calling people out reminded her of Orion.
She looked at Asher, a smirk playing on her lips. “So, it was through your fiancée’s connections that you arranged all of this today, acting as if it was all your doing.”
Asher’s face turned from pale to purple, clearly embarrassed, and he stormed off with Evelina in tow. Lemira watched them leave. “I really had no idea his fiancée was one of the Waverly girls.”
Matthew nodded. “Yeah, Ms. Waverly was born with a disability, one leg shorter than the other. The Waverlies have been keeping it under wraps, hardly anyone has seen Ms. Waverly or had much contact with her in social circles.”

Asher, always so concerned about appearances, must have felt marrying a disabled girl was beneath him, worried people would accuse him of social climbing or living off a woman.

Matthew continued, “I heard the Waverlies were looking to marry off their daughter, preferring a son–in–law who’d move in with them, easier to control. But they kept it hush–hush, so we had no clue who it was. Never imagined it’d be someone from the Langston family.”

Lemira was taken aback. “The Waverlies wanted a son–in–law to move in with them? You sure?”
