Bonus Chapter – Clark & Griffin (4)-2
I couldn’t help it – a laugh escaped. “You’re kidding.”
“It’s all here in black–and–white print,” the doctor said, showing me her textbook. There was a page on the Black Death as well as several scary–looking illustrations of symptoms I did not have. “Fatigue and natisea are early on–set symptoms of the bubonic plague, and if you’re left untreated, it appears that humans can die from this. You don’t appear to have a fever yet, but we should quarantine you before the boils start
“Doc,” I interrupted her, “I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but its not that. Why don’t you give me something for the nausea and we’ll start there, okay?”
She nodded, still looking entirely concerned that I might keel over with blackened fingers and bursting boils.
Jane wasn’t pleased that the doctor wasn’t able to diagnose me with something other than a medieval plague, but the Zofran she’d given me was working magic.
As long as I took a pill first thing in the morning, I was able to stomach most of my breakfast. For two weeks, I continued on that way and then Griffin came home.
I was more than anxious to see him.
I always was.
He rarely left for this long, but the trip had taken longer than he’d thought.
I stood in the throne room awaiting his arrival – like most of the castle. There was never a small greeting party when the King returned, especially not after an absence this long.
“Well, this is a face I haven’t seen in a single training session lately, a familiar voice greeted me.
“Ivan.” I turned around and sighed. “And I know. I’m sorry I’ve been slacking lately.”
He crossed his arms over his chest, looking as stern as ever. “Self–defense is not the kind of training you can slack on,” he chastised
“If anything, I’d have thought I’d see you in the training room even more without our King’s presence to distract you.”

“Truthfully, I just haven’t been feeling that well,” I admitted. “It’s nothing serious. Just a stubborn stomach bug I can’t seem to shake, but that’s no excuse. I’ll be there bright and early tomorrow morning. Pinky promise.”
I grinned, holding out my pinky – only to receive an eye–roll in return. “I expect it,” he grumbled.

I made to slap Ivan on the shoulder, but when I moved close, his nostrils flared and he froze, eyes wide.
“What is it?” I asked.
He flared his nostrils again.
“I don’t smell bad, do I?” I’d showered just this morning, but werewolves had senses that were far superior to my measly human
ones.
“No,” Ivan said, looking as if he’d seen a ghost. “You do not smell bad. You just…no more training sessions.”
“What?”

I can’t train you anymore, he said. “Not anymore. Not for awhile.
I crossed my arms over my chest. “You just said you expect to see m tomorrow morning. What’s with the change of heart?”
Ivan shook his head. “What’s changed is that your husband would ki me if he learned I was still trying to train you in this…” He paused…condition.”
1 opened my mouth to ask what he meant by that but there was a rockus towards the front of the room and then the doors opened. Griffin stepped through, guards in tow.

It took him only seconds to reach me, pulling me off the floor and into his arms. “I missed you, little fox,” he breathed, his nose buried into the crook of my neck.
“I’m so happy you’re home,” I told him.
He nuzzled his nose deeper into my neck and then paused, his entire body stiffening.
“What? What is it?”
Instead of answering, he pulled his face away and turned to the crowd. “Everyone, out now!” He barked.
My heart sped up. This was the second time someone had acted oddly after sniffing me something had to be wrong. Maybe I was
sick. Probably not with the bubonic plague, but it had to be something serious to elicit this kind of reaction.
