Chapter 13
Tyler went on, still self–righteous: “Elizabeth, it’s an undéniable fact that you caused Sarah Carlisle’s infertility. I’m not even holding that against you now, just come back.”
Seeing I still wouldn’t respond, he grew more agitated: “Are you really going to stay with Jeff Vince? Our child belongs in the Horton family!”
Even now, Tyler positioned himself high above me, always correct, as if acting out some magnanimous charade. He seemed certain I’d always be waiting at the original spot, longing for him. He even dismissed my marriage to Jeff as nothing but a childish tantrum.
His self–delusion and arrogance almost made me laugh.
“Child?” I stared straight into his eyes. “Guess where our child is now

He seized my arm in fury: “Elizabeth Cala, you were never pregnant! How dare you deceive
me!”
“I have no interest in lying to you.”
I locked eyes with him, speaking slowly and deliberately:
“I…aborted…it.”
Rage ignited in Tyler’s eyes. “Elizabeth Cala, how dare you?!”
I met his gaze without flinching: “Tyler Horton, do you remember sending me to apologize to Sarah Carlisle with a cake?”
He didn’t seem to care. “So what?”
I smiled and continued, “Do you remember how I fell down the stairs?”
Tyler gave a contemptuous grunt.
I pressed on: “I was standing perfectly fine. How did it happen that I just conveniently fell

when Sarah Carlisle was putting a coat over my shoulders?”
Tyler said nothing, but the answer was obvious.
I wrenched my arm free and stepped closer, pressing a finger to his chest as if prodding at his heart: “Are you genuinely clueless, or just pretending?”
For the first time, Tyler’s gaze faltered. Still, he tried to stand on moral high ground: “You brought this on yourself! Ever hear ‘the boy who cried wolf? You lied over and over,
earing down my trust!”
Even though I understood his true nature, hearing these shameless words still sparked a
surge of anger.
I grabbed the fabric of his shirt as if clenching his heart: “How long are you going to lie to
yourself, Tyler Horton?”
I enumerated all the false accusations and traps, questioning him one by one:
“At my birthday party, do you really believe I pushed Sarah Carlisle into the pool?”
He said nothing.
“Before our graduation defense, do you truly believe I personally deleted the thesis Sarah
Carlisle had just completed?”
Still silence.
“And the kidnapping and assault–do you really believe I planned it all, paid off the perpetrators, and even knocked myself out?”
Tyler opened his mouth: “I…”
I laughed. “If I really did that, why didn’t Sarah Carlisle call the police? From the day she stepped into the Cala home, she’s been itching to make me disappear. Why wouldn’t she
report it?”
I fixed him with a piercing gaze: “She was sleeping with you. Would she really care about sisterly affection?”

Tyler’s eyes darted away, no response.
This glaring gap in logic had never mattered to him. Not because he couldn’t see it, but
because he deliberately chose not to.
Only by ignoring it could he justify seeing me as a dull fiancée who committed terrible
acts–a villain.
Only that way could he free himself from guilt when he transferred his affections to Sarah
arlisle, maintaining his so–called righteousness.
Tyler Horton, there was never any place in your heart for me–or for Sarah.
You’ve always cared only about yourself.
Just then, Tyler seemed to remember something. His eyes narrowed sharply: “Elizabeth, how do you know all this? Have you recovered your memory?!”
“Yes, my memory has returned.”
I gave him a scornful smile. “All thanks to you. When you forced me to apologize to Sarah Carlisle, you pressed my head down and slammed it against the floor.”
The self–assured look on Tyler Horton’s face began to fracture.
“And thanks also to Sarah Carlisle,” I continued, “who pushed me down the stairs. My head struck a flowerpot on the landing–perfectly timed, wasn’t it?”
I asked him, “When I was lying there on the ground, bleeding from my head, what were you doing, Tyler Horton?”
Feigning a moment of contemplation, I then acted as if I’d just remembered: “Oh, that’s right–you were holding Sarah Carlisle in your arms, kicking me, telling me to crawl back on my own.”
Tyler refused to meet my eyes.
I persisted, “When I called you and told you I was pregnant, do you remember what you said that day?”

He stayed silent.
“You said I was lucky, that now I had a chance to atone. You told me to properly carry this
child–for Sarah Carlisle.”
