Chapter 6
After the Molly Maid crew arrived to clean the apartment, I took Emily out for a late–night
snack nearby.
Save returned, I spotted a familiar figure lingering downstairs,
I told Emily to head up first while I approached Trevor.
Gone was the domineering attitude from two hours earlier; instead, his eyes reflected a profound and unspoken sense of gloom.
It was the first time I’d seen such a defeated expression on his face.
It seemed he had uncovered the truth about my father passing away during the wedding.
“Cathy, can we talk?”
In four years of marriage, this was the first time Trevor had addressed me so intimately.
It sent chills down my spine.
I quickly replied in a cold tone, “We’ve said everything that needs to be said. I have nothing to discuss with you. The place where you kicked my leg still hurts. When you have time, go ahead and file for divorce. I don’t want anything.”
For my dad’s medical bills, I had trapped both myself and Emily in the Abney family for four long years.
Now, all I wanted was my freedom.
After I finished speaking, I tried to walk past him, but he suddenly grabbed my wrist, spinning me around to face him.
There was a flicker of reluctance in his eyes.
“Catherine, you know my family’s situation. Divorce isn’t something you can just demand.

Chapter 6
Looking at the face I once longed for in my dreams, I felt no emotion now.
“Oh, really? Then I guess we can go to court.”
“Mrs. Abney is well aware of my family’s situation. I doubt she would make things difficult
for me.’
After all, there are plenty of obedient tools at her disposal, and I, the disobedient daughter–in–law, no longer met her requirements.
Hearing my words, Trevor’s grip on my wrist gradually weakened, and the light in his eyes
faded.
This time, he didn’t stop me from leaving.
As I went up the stairs, I couldn’t help but let out a bitter smile.
As expected, his feelings of guilt were fleeting. Just a slight show of displeasure from me, and he was ready to walk away right away.
His unwavering affection would always belong to Selena.
Back home, I saw the worry etched on Emily’s face. I comforted her with a gentle pat on the
head and told her to get some rest.
I curled up on the couch, applying for jobs until my head spun.
Thankfully, I soon received an interview notification.
The next morning, I slung my bag over my shoulder and headed out, only to bump into
Trevor outside.
He wore a crisp shirt and dark trousers. The defeat from last night was gone. He approached me with a sly smile, clutching a folder in his hands, his eyes glimmering with
expectation.
“Why don’t you and Emily move in here? The property is under my name. Your apartment
is too old and too small.”
He openly criticized the place I had worked hard to buy, ignoring the darkening expression
on my face.
Before I could respond, he continued, “Why are you dressed like that? Are you going to a job interview?”
“The Abney family can support you; you don’t need to do this.”
His arrogance made me laugh in disbelief. “Trevor, are you bored? Who do
you think
you
“I live here so I won’t have to see you every day. Can’t you understand that? Is your brain development a bit slow?”
“I don’t need your support! I have hands and feet; I can work for myself! I was just pretending to fit this role! I can earn my own money without you!”
With that, I shoved past him, trying to push his folder out of the way.
But just two steps later, Trevor blocked my path with his long legs.
To my surprise, there was a hint of vulnerability and desperation in his eyes.
His voice wavered as he spoke. “How could I be bored when I have such a big company to run? I let Stefan handle the meeting today, so I could take a moment to come here. I’m really sorry about your dad.”
His insincere apology made me want to gag.
I had used to wait at home for him, and he would always claim to be busy.
Now that my father was gone, and I was asking for a divorce, he suddenly found the time.
The image of my dad passing away in Emily’s arms replayed in my mind. I dug my nails into my palm.
“I’d accept your apology if it could bring my dad back to life.”
“Otherwise, I’d prefer you to disappear from my life forever!”
“Trevor, I truly don’t understand you.”
Chapter 6
“When we got married, you warned me to keep my feelings in check. Then things got éven
worse as you treated Selena as your wife, giving her all the privileges. Now that I want a divorce, why are you coming back to me?”
With each of my words, his face paled a bit more.
Just as he opened his mouth to respond, his phone suddenly rang.
