He finally eased his grip.
My leg felt like it was being crushed under his weight, pain radiating through my body.
Emily seized the opportunity to push him away, and with her help, I struggled to stand.
Stefan looked ready to intervene, but seeing his brother’s expression, he held back.
Once Trevor hung up the phone, I was inching toward the door again.
He snapped, “Wait! We’re not done here! You can’t leave!”
“How am I supposed to explain this to my mother? I won’t tolerate any nonsense. You need to give me an explanation!”
Now, Trevor’s eyes were icy and calculating, as if he were the one who had just lost control
moments before.
I forced a mocking smile, pointing at Emily’s healing wound. “My dad’s already gone. Aret you really going to have me lose my sister too?”
“Do we need to clarify anything between us? We started off unclear, so we’ll end up unclear as well. You’re too busy taking care of your mistress; don’t waste time.”
Trevor’s anger flared again at my indifferent attitude.
“I’ve explained this to you countless times! Selena and I aren’t what you think. Divorce isn’t something you can just throw around. Don’t forget what you promised me!”
“I only just found out about your dad’s passing. He’s been fine for four years–how was I supposed to know this would be the end?”
“If you want a wedding, I can arrange that for you. Everything is negotiable, so stop being
unreasonable!”
I couldn’t help but laugh coldly at his words. “Everything is negotiabl
gone now, and I have no reason to maintain any relationship with you. There’s nothing to discuss except divorce!”
The only reason we agreed to a secret marriage was for my dad’s medical bills.
In the Abney brothers‘ hearts, Selena was always the priority. However, other people in the Abney family looked down on a woman like her–manipulative and scheming.
hey wanted a daughter–in–law they could easily control, someone meek and malleable.
We were merely tools to silence the Abney parents.
Now that Dad was gone, it was time for the Abney family’s dirty secrets to come to light!
Seeing Trevor falter, Stefan immediately turned to Emily, barking orders. “Aren’t you going to talk some sense into your sister? What are you just standing there for? Is divorce a joke? I admit, Trevor and I have faults. We can organize a new wedding for you two. If you’re unhappy, we could even hold it at your dad’s grave!”
Before Emily could respond, Selena piped up, anxious and pleading. “Please, don’t fight! It’s all my fault! I came here just to prevent any misunderstandings. I meant to explain, but it ended up causing more confusion!”
I looked at her fragile face, and a smirk of derision crept across my lips. “Still playing the victim? We’re getting divorced, so congratulations! Your journey to the top is just beginning.”
She thought that without us, she could finally take over as the lady of the Abney household.
What she didn’t realize was that there was still a long way to go.
The true horror of the Abney family was far beyond her imagination.
Taking a deep breath, Emily finally spoke up firmly to Stefan. “I won’t intervene. This is a choice my sister and I have made together. Our four years of marriage have been the most
painful days of my life.”
With that, Emily took my hand, and we turned to leave.
Stefan had never seen Emily so resolute; he wanted to chase after us but was held back by

Trevor.
Just as we reached the ground floor, Emily suddenly fell and nearly collapsed.
I quickly dialed for help, managing to get her to the hospital.
While the doctor treated Emily’s wounds, I pulled out my phone to find a cleaning service
for
my small apartment, where Emily and I lived before the marriage.
Nat’s when I stumbled upon the news about the Abney heir’s wedding trending online.
The comment section was filled with bots, pushing it to the top of the charts.
The leaked contract photos from the wedding planning company had Selena’s name signed
on them.
I shut the news page in frustration and booked a deep cleaning service from Molly Maid
instead.
Just as I paid, Emily emerged, bandaged and ready to leave.
As I supported her out of the hospital and ordered a ride, I noticed that trending topic had
vanished without a trace.
It didn’t take a genius to know that was the work of Mrs. Abney, Trevor’s mother.
She never allowed any negative news to surface that could tarnish the Abney name.
Four years ago, when Trevor and Stefan started to pursue Selena, Mrs. Abney had intervened. Now, she wouldn’t let Selena’s scheme success either.
I could never forget the first time Trevor brought me to the Abney mansion.
Mrs. Abney looked at me with her condescending gaze. It felt like she was appraising a piece of merchandise.
The Abney family was so powerful they didn’t even need to arrange marriages; they simply chose Emily and me to sign the marriage contracts.
Afterwards, they tossed me a card with five million as if they were buying a toy for their

son. A toy that at their beck and call.
I often feared that before my dad’s health improved, the Abney family would cast Emily
and me aside.
But I never expected the cruel reality to strike faster than I imagined.
Selena thought that once I divorced, she could take my place.
What she didn’t realize was the true reason why the Abney family didn’t choose her.
