Chapter 4
Everything that happened today was part of her twisted plan all along.
Seeing me speechless, Trevor thought I was filled with regret.
He sneered, “Can you believe Selena went out of her way to contact a wedding planner to organize a make–up wedding? She also used her connections to schedule an appointment with a specialist for your dad.”
“From the looks of you, it doesn’t seem necessary anymore!”
“Right now, apologize to Selena, and then you and that Emily can get the hell out of my
house!”
I grabbed at his arm, my voice cold as ice. “A make–up wedding? Don’t you see how ridiculous that sounds? Even if she organized it a thousand times, she’d find a way to ruin it a thousand and one! Let her plan it for you three! Emily and I are better off without it!”
“Apologize? Only if she kneels in front of my dad and begs for forgiveness!”
The fire in his eyes ignited. He gritted his teeth, each word laced with venom. “Catherine
Brown, am I giving you face? Do you not understand what I’m saying?”
This fake wedding was something you grovelled for two days and nights to get! Now you don’t want it? Or do you fear that someone will reveal that your dad’s illness is a lie?”
“Four years ago, he was already on his deathbed. You used it as an excuse to marry me. Four years later, he’s on his deathbed again. This time you asked for a wedding. Your dad must have some serious resilience.”
I couldn’t believe he twisted my father’s sickness into a bargaining chip for a sham marriage.
In that moment, my blood ran cold. I clenched my fists with all the strength I could muster, my knuckles trembling.

“Shut your mouth! You don’t get to talk about my dad! You don’t!”
“Trevor, divorce me now! I never want to see you again! You three can rot in hell together!”
Hearing me mention divorce again, he suddenly seized my throat, tightening his grip.
The pressure increased, and my face turned purple.
Selena had just cleaned the vegetable leaves off her hair and, seeing the situation, quickly
pproached and took hold of Trevor’s hand.
Reluctantly, he released me before I completely suffocated.
Selena approached, her eyes brimming with faux innocence.
As she bent down to help me, Emily, who had just regained consciousness, shoved her away with such force that Selena bumped her arm painfully against the edge of a cabinet.
Stefan immediately wrapped his ar
around Selena, checking for injuries with concern.

really don’t learn, do you? I’ve given you enough chances! Now you’re using divorce as a threat? Go ahead and leave! I’ve had enough of your dad putting on a show for four years! If he dies without closing his eyes,
that’s not my problem!”
Trevor’s face was a storm cloud, dark and threatening.
Just as I helped Emily to her feet, limping toward the door, I heard Trevor snarl, “Didn’t you hear me? You two need to apologize to Selena!”
Everything that had just unfolded had completely crushed the last shred of hope I clung to.
Hearing his voice, I could only manage a cold laugh. “We’re done; you’re nothing to me. Why should I apologize? The one who should be begging for forgiveness is this wretched b*tch who caused my dad’s death!”
“No, you’re all equally wretched–what a perfect family you three make!”
As I stepped out the door, Trevor’s hand shot out, grabbing the back of my neck and yanking me back.

Emily rushed forward, panic written across her face.
Trevor forced me to kneel before Selena, his shoe pressing hard into my calf, immobilizing
- me.
Dialing his assistant’s number, he threatened, “Apologize now, or I won’t hesitate to make sure your dad has a proper funeral while he’s still living!”
The call connected, and the threat in his eyes intensified.
I gritted my teeth, spitting at him in defiance.
In an icy tone, he declared, “Cancel the wedding; turn it into Catherine Brown’s dad’s funeral! After dragging this out for four years, I’ll make sure he really dies! Cancel the doctor Selena scheduled at the hospital!”
The voice on the other end responded quickly, “Mr. Abney, Ms. Brown’s father has already passed away this morning during the wedding.”
Trevor’s furious expression froze in place, then shattered like glass.
