Chapter 6
He held out his right hand to me, rolling up his sleeve to reveal a shocking scar: “I was cut by the car glass at the time. I was in a rush to catch my flight, so I didn’t treat it thoroughly enough. It got infected for a while. You can check the hospital’s surveillance footage and
ask my parents.”
reached out, trembling as I touched the gruesome scar: “Why didn’t you say anything
before?”
He tilted his head up, as if struggling to suppress his pain: “When I asked about you later, my parents told me you were with this scumbag. I rushed back to the country and saw him kissing you at your family’s doorstep. You looked so happy, I thought it was for the best, as long as you were happy…”
“You two were already together, weren’t you?” Nadia’s shrill voice interrupted Patrick’s words: “The child you were carrying was this bastard’s, right? No wonder you were so
determined to miscarry!”
I stared at Alex in disbelief as he seemed encouraged by Nadia’s words. My seven years of love for him had been based on a lie. Why did he lie to me? And now he was allowing others to throw mud at me.
I wanted to curse at him, but when I opened my mouth, I could only tremble. Patrick held me back and spoke to Alex with contempt: “I heard you took a large sum of money from Uncle Carter for this incident. That’s fraud! You choose – jail or signing the papers.”
Alex hesitated. Nadia was about to say something, but Patrick fixed his gaze on her: “When was your car accident?”
I was still in too much shock to process the meaning behind his seemingly random question.
But Alex and Nadia’s faces suddenly turned red. Alex grabbed the divorce agreement, signed it, and threw it at me: “From now on, we’re done. Stop prying into Nadia’s private
affairs!”
Long after they had left, I still alternated between staring at the divorce agreement and looking at Patrick, unable to come to terms with what had happened.

Chapter 6
After what felt like an eternity, I finally broke down in Patrick’s arms, clutching the divorce agreement tightly as I sobbed uncontrollably,
It was over.
My seven years of misplaced love and seven years of lies,
At that moment, I didn’t know that these seven years of lies were far from over…
You should have divorced him long ago! I never liked that guy from the start. He had bad intentions!” That day, when I was sent home, my dad heard that Alex and I were already processing the divorce. He immediately clapped his hands in approval.
My mom kept wiping away tears. I knew she felt I had been wronged these seven years.
During these seven years, I had argued with my family countless times for Alex’s sake, even willing to sever ties with my dad.
Patrick whispered something to my dad, who quickly took him to the study to discuss something. I watched my dad’s slightly hunched back and his graying hair as he turned, feeling a deep ache in my heart.
Before, relying on my family’s decent financial situation, I had run my company as I pleased. The money I earned was all spent on indulging Alex, while my losses were covered
by my parents.
Because my heart was all wrapped up in Alex, my dad didn’t dare let me take over the family business, no matter how tired he was.
I made up my mind to give back to those who truly loved me.
