Chapter 3: A Phone Call
Amelia deleted Mark’s number, blocked him on all social media. Life was too short to waste on someone who treated her like an afterthought.
To her surprise, Ethan called.
That’s how you treat a guy after using him?” His voice was laced with an unfamiliar hint of vulnerability.
Amelia stared at the phone in disbelief. Was this the same stoic, serious CEO she knew?
“Ethan, I’m so sorry-”
“Ethan,” he interrupted. “Call me Ethan.”
“Okay, Ethan, I really am sorry about the other night. How about I make it up to you?
Dinner, maybe?”
“Alright,” he replied, a hesitant note in his voice.
Before Amelia could suggest an alternative, he continued, “Actually, how about you come watch me race my motorcycle this weekend? Consider it… repayment
repayment for your services.‘
She was speechless. Was this really Ethan talking? There was a weird sense of familiarity in his awkwardness, though she couldn’t quite place it.
Her phone buzzed again. This time it was Mark.
“You blocked me?” His voice was a low growl.
“Should I be surprised?” Amelia scoffed. “Shouldn’t you be with your precious Vivian?”
“Don’t be ridiculous!” he snapped. “Vivian’s been abroad all these years. It’s not easy for her being back. I need to be there for her. Can’t you be a little understanding?”
“Mark, are you serious? We. Are. Over! What gives you the right to talk to me like that? As Vivian’s boyfriend, maybe? In which case, let me be clear: get lost.”
