Chapter 6
When Jeremy heard what Vera said, his expression changed abruptly. He could never have imagined that Vera would choose to leave him.
He was stunned, wondering whether she had discovered anything. The more he thought about it, the more scared he became. He stood up and tightly held Vera’s hand. It seemed as if he was indeed
afraid that she would leave him.
Seeing his eyes filled with panic, she slowly separated his fingers one by one and then calmly said, “Since I was little, I have to give Elsa whatever she wants. This is how I grew up. I don’t even have
the right to say no.”
Upon hearing this, Jeremy felt relieved. He then held her hand again and announced to everyone.
“Mom and Dad, I love Vera, and I only want to be with her my whole life. I wish you’d stop saying
things like that. It’s gonna hurt her.”
Jeremy spoke very sincerely, and if Vera hadn’t known who Jeremy loved early on, she would probably have believed him.
The reason why he would be so anxious to express his love for Vera in front of Clara and Andrew and
would defend her so fiercely was not that he cared about her feelings at all.
It was all because he was afraid that she would find out his feelings for Elsa and refuse to marry
him. In that case, he would not be able to protect Elsa anymore.
He didn’t have to pretend to have a deep affection towards Vera just to deceive her.
Soon, these people would have nothing to do with her anymore, and she would completely disappear from their world.
She would live the life she wanted with a brand–new self and would no longer be deceived by
so–called love.
“Thank you, Jeremy!” Vera looked at Jeremy and paused for a moment. Afraid that he wouldn’t
believe it, she then added seriously, “I know everything you’ve done for me these past five years,
and I’m lucky to have known you. Thank you for being there for me.”
Jeremy embraced her in his arms and whispered, “I’m lucky to know you, too, and thank you for
agreeing to marry me.”
Elsa, who was standing aside, watched the affectionate couple full of hatred. She stood up with tears welled up in her eyes.
“I’m sorry. It’s all my fault. If only I had died back then, Vera wouldn’t have to suffer so much. It’s all my fault.”

Her tears fell along as she said, and she looked fragile.
Jeremy instinctively pushed Vera away and wiped the tears from the corners of Elsa’s eyes gently with a pitiful look. “Elsa, don’t cry. Vera didn’t mean to blame you.”
The panicked appearance of Jeremy deeply hurt Vera.
What hurt her even more was Andrew’s reproachful words, “I told you to stay out of my presence! Look what you did to my perfect birthday party, you ungrateful thing!”
Every word hurt, but Jeremy was all about Elsa at this moment, completely disregarding what
Andrew had said.
Looking at the man who only cared about Elsa in front of her, Vera suddenly felt quite ridiculous.
She wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes with the back of her hand and said coldly, “Since I am an eyesore to you, I will go now! Enjoy your family reunion.”
Vera was about to leave, not even giving a glance to Jeremy. However, Andrew had no intention of letting her go so easily.
Andrew pulled her back forcefully, and said with his tone as cold as ice, “You made Elsa cry. Apologize before you can leave!”
