“Who are you? Why did you catch me?” The little boy burst into tears as soon as he saw Suzy. “I want to go home! I want my mon!”
“Don’t cry, little one,” Suzy said gently, trying to soothe him. “I just want to ask you a question. If you answer it, I’ll take you back to your mom.”
“I don’t even know you! Why should I answer your questions? I don’t know anything
.” The boy kept crying. “I don’t know anything! Take me home! My mom will be worried if she can’t find me!”
“Are you really clueless, or are you pretending not to know?” Allen interjected with a stern tone. “The surveillance footage clearly shows you putting that letter in the mailbox. If you don’t know anything, why would you deliver it?
“Here’s a warning—we’re not exactly good people. If you don’t tell us the truth, we won’t let you see your mom. Worse, we might even bring her in too!”
Sometimes, intimidation worked better than coaxing with children.
The boy, sensing that Allen wasn’t joking, cried even harder. “Please don’t take my mom! I did it—it was me! It has nothing to do with my mom. Don’t hurt her!”
“If you don’t want your mom to get hurt, then tell us who asked you to deliver that letter,” Allen pressed, his tone even harsher. “I’ll give you three seconds. If you don’t cooperate, you won’t get another chance!”
“I… I…” The boy looked conflicted, tears streaming down his face. “It doesn’t matter! Just don’t hurt my mom. She’s not in good health and can’t handle stress. Do whatever you want to me, just don’t go near her!”
It was clear this was a good kid–so young, yet already putting his mom’s well–being above everything else.
Suzy crouched down and gently wiped his tears. “Little one, you really care about your mom, don’t you? I’m the same. I care a lot about my dad. You don’t want us to hurt your mom, but someone has taken my dad away.”
“Your dad was taken?” The little boy’s face filled with surprise. “When did it happen? Why don’t you go save him?”
“Because I don’t know where they took him,” Suzy explained patiently. “The person who made you deliver that letter is the one who took my dad. Inside was a picture of him.
