Seeing that Diana seemed genuinely interested in Elliot, Suzy made a decision. “Let me help you!”
“No, no, absolutely not!” Diana practically leapt out of her chair at the suggestion. “Sis, you can’t get involved. I can handle this on my own! If you step in, Elliot might get the wrong idea, so I really appreciate it, but I don’t need the help!”
“Are you sure?”
“Absolutely!”
“Alright, I won’t interfere. Matters of the heart are tricky, and it’s not always a good idea for others to meddle. But if you ever need anything, just let me know.”
“Got it!”
After Diana left, Suzy’s expression darkened thoughtfully. “Blood ties run deep. In the end, you still can’t bring yourself to truly abandon your brother, can you?”
If Diana hadn’t reacted so dramatically earlier, Suzy might have actually been fooled. Not that she was angry–after all, Dylan was Diana’s brother.
Suzy understood that now.
Before reconnecting with her own brother, she might not have fully grasped the strength of that bond. But now, she knew.
If something ever threatened the relationship between her brother and Evangeline, she wouldn’t be able to stand by idly either.

“If that’s how it is, then I’ll just go along with her plan,” Suzy muttered to herself.
When Diana came by with another meal for him, Elliot had already heard about her meeting with Suzy.
As she served the food, he casually asked, “You know, people always say sisters–in–law and younger sisters are natural rivals. How is it that you and my mentor get along so well? Better than some real siblings, even.”
Diana paused for a moment, her hand halfway to serving him a piece of meat. “That’s because Suzy’s amazing. From the moment she joined our family, she treated my grandmother and me with genuine kindness.
“Kindness like that doesn’t go unnoticed. She’s always been good to us, so of course, we feel the same about her.”

She added almost offhandedly, “Oh, by the way, I visited her today.”
“You met with her?” Elliot’s tone tightened slightly, his lips pressing into a thin line. “How is she doing?”
“Sis looked like she was in good spirits,” Diana said, though she avoided meeting Elliot’s gaze. “I even said a lot of good things about you while we talked.”
“What did she say?” Elliot asked, his face lighting up with anticipation.
“She said she knows,” Diana replied, hesitating slightly. “But she just can’t see you as anything but her student.”
Seeing his disappointment, Diana quickly added, “Don’t get discouraged. You have to give her some time. A bond like yours doesn’t change overnight. You’ve been her student for so many years. It’s not just her–even I wouldn’t be able to shift my perspective so quickly.”
“You’re right,” Elliot sighed. “Especially since we hadn’t seen each other for so long before this.”
“Actually, Sis really cares about you. She came all this way to help you and worked tirelessly to find a cure for your condition. These things take time, so don’t rush it.”
Elliot glanced at her, his voice softer. “Thanks. When she finally accepts me, I’ll make sure to thank you with a generous gift.”
Diana’s guilt only deepened. “Y–You should focus on eating. I just remembered I have something to do, so I’ll head out now!”
Almost fleeing, Diana hurried to the door. But as she opened it, she froze.
Standing on the other side was Suzy.
“Sis…” Diana stammered, startled.
Suzy smiled faintly, her lips curving into a knowing smirk. “Oh, you’re here too. Perfect timing. I was looking for both of you.”
Elliot blinked. “Looking for us?”
“Yes, both of you,” Suzy confirmed, taking Diana by the hand and walking over to Elliot. “I’ve found a potential cure for the toxin in your system. There’s a rare plant in the polar region known for its extraordinary properties. It thrives in extreme cold and is said to neutralize even the most persistent poisons.
“Diana, I need you to go with him.”
“Me?” Diana pointed at herself.
“This plant is also said to work wonders on scars. It could help you with the ones you’ve been dealing with for so long. So, the two of you should go together.”
