On the surface, her words sounded comforting, but in reality, they were laced with cruelty, pouring salt on an open wound. The more Evangeline suffered, the happier Serena felt.
“You really want to know, Sister?” Evangeline asked, her eyes fixed steadily on Serena.
“I know I shouldn’t ask you this right now,” Serena replied with feigned concern. “I’m just curious about what kind of man he was. He must’ve been remarkable; otherwise, you wouldn’t have fallen for him, right? After all these years, you’ve never cared for any man- he was the first.”
“Yes, he was the first. And he’ll be the only one,” Evangeline said, allowing her voice to tremble with emotion. “Whoever it was that goaded Suzy into this… If I find out who, I won’t let them off!”

“Sister, why not leave it to me?” Serena offered eagerly. “I’ll help you look into it. I want to know who hated you so much they’d resort to such a vicious scheme.”
“Fine, I’ll leave it to you,” Evangeline agreed, a bitter edge in her tone. “I need to focus on organizing Simon’s funeral. Even though he wasn’t officially my husband, I still want to give him a burial worthy of one. Even if the family elders oppose it, I’ll see it through.”
“Whatever you decide, I’ll support you,” Serena said, dabbing away Evangeline’s tears with a handkerchief. “I’ll even help deal with the family if they cause trouble. Don’t cry. Remember, even if Simon is gone, you still have me. No matter what happens, I’ll protect you, just like I did when we were kids.”
“I know.”
“Good. You should get some rest,” Serena said, standing to leave. “I’ll make arrangements to investigate right away. I’ll find out who’s behind this, I promise.”
Evangeline remained seated, watching Serena’s retreating figure with unblinking eyes.
She used to believe their bond as sisters would never change. But the reality was painfully
absurd.
It turned out that, in the face of ambition and power, she–Evangeline–meant nothing.
As Simon had said, constant patience and compromise didn’t bring Serena back to her side. Instead, they only fueled her sister’s greed.

“I gave you a chance, Sister,” Evangeline thought silently to herself. “And not just once.‘
Her decision was made.
Serena had no idea what was going through Evangeline’s mind. As she reached the door, she paused and turned back to ask, “What do you plan to do with that Suzy woman?”

“You can’t think like that!” Serena interrupted sharply. “She may be Simon’s sister, but how could she not trust her own brother and instead believe someone else? That was her brother! How could she not believe him?
“There should be unconditional trust between family members. Take us, for example–if someone told me you weren’t my sister, I wouldn’t believe a single word of it! She should’ve done the same.”
“So, what do you suggest, Sister?”
“No matter who it is, if they’ve done wrong, they must pay the price. Suzy is no exception.”
Serena fixed Evangeline with a stern look. “If you can’t bring yourself to handle it, leave it to me. I’ll take care of everything for you.”
As expected, everything was unfolding just as Suzy had anticipated. She had predicted Serena’s reaction and made preparations in advance.
Evangeline didn’t hesitate. “Fine, let’s do as you say. She’s currently in Cellblock One. I’ll leave the rest to you.”
“Don’t worry. I’ll handle it. You should just focus on organizing Simon’s funeral.”
