“You believe the Steeles saved you, so for years–even with how Victor treats you–you’ve never left, never give up. You think that makes you noble, deserving of praise…”

“Then why are you pushing yourself, dragging your sick body to work for them?” asked, her voice firm as she stepped beside Nadia. “If you’re unwell, you should rest. If you don’t care about yourself, why would anyone else?”

Nadia’s eyes welled up, tears pooling uncontrollably as she stared at Suzy. “Why are you telling me this?”
For the first time in years, someone had said something like this to her. And it wasn’t from someone close to her. It was Suzy, someone she barely knew. Yet her words felt more genuine, more comforting, than anything Nadia had ever heard from the people she’d spent her whole life around.
“Because I see a reflection of the old me in you,” Suzy said, her gaze steady. “Maybe it’s not my place to say this, but you’ve tried hard enough for long enough. Some things, no matter how much you strive for them, just aren’t meant to be. And when you’ve done your best, they shouldn’t become regrets.”
Nadia blinked, and a moment of clarity washed over her. “You’re right. I’m practically dying, and here I am clinging to this so–called love like it matters. Love? It’s all nonsense. I’m done with it!”
A smile tugged at her lips as she looked at Suzy “I should’ve talked to you sooner. Maybe then I could’ve woken up a little earlier.”
Suzy offered a wry smile in return. “Not necessarily. I was just as stubborn as you once. It wasn’t until I was at death’s door that I finally woke up. When your life’s hanging by a thread, love, men–all of it becomes meaningless. They can all go to hell.”
“Exactly!” Nadia nodded, a faint bitterness in her smile. “I loved him for so many years, and what did it get me? He went so far as to fake his death for over a year just to avoid me.
