Suzy had said before that once Charlotte was found, she would agree to be his girlfriend. Now, Charlotte had been captured, and Hawk had saved her yet again.
“It counts.”
Hawk fell silent.
He hadn’t expected her to answer his question, much less now of all times. A moment ago, he’d only mentioned it casually after seeing Dylan, not thinking she’d respond so decisively.
Catching his surprised gaze in the rearview mirror, Suzy repeated firmly, “When all this is over, we’ll officially start dating.”
Three times. He had risked his life to save hers on three separate occasions. As the old saying goes: once is chance, twice is a coincidence, but the third time? That’s a debt she couldn’t ignore.
When Suzy arrived at the place where Charlotte was being held, only two or three days had passed, but Charlotte was already unrecognizable.
Her hair was a tangled mess, her body was caked in blood and filth. Any trace of her former elegance or dignity was long gone.
Seeing her in this state only deepened Suzy’s hatred.
It had been mere days for Charlotte, but her mother had endured this kind of suffering for twenty long years.
Burning with fury, Suzy’s emotions boiled over when Charlotte, ever defiant, dared to provoke her.
“Suzy, so what if you kill me? What difference does it make? Can it change the fact that your mother had endured two decades of torment at my hands? And as for your father and brothers, killing me won’t bring them back to life either!”
Charlotte’s jaw, which she had realigned herself, now allowed her to speak freely, and she wasted no time unleashing her venom.
Before Suzy could act, Hawk’s patience snapped. He strode forward in one swift move, grabbing Charlotte from the corner where she had been cowering.
“Charlotte, it seems your filthy mouth has never learned to speak like a decent human being. In that case, there’s no reason to keep it.”

With a flash of his blade, Hawk prepared to cut out her tongue.
“Wait!” Suzy’s voice rang out, stopping Hawk mid–action. “I still have questions for her.” Hawk’s eyes flickered with hesitation. “Even if you ask, she might not tell you the truth. And even if she does, who’s to say it’s not a lie?
Ignoring him, Suzy stepped closer to Charlotte and stared her down. “Charlotte, before Ruby died, she told me that Mark wasn’t your only accomplice. There’s another man.” Charlotte let out a mocking laugh. “So what? Do you want me to tell you who he is?” Her laughter grew louder, more sinister. “Yes, Ruby was right. Besides Mark, there is another man. Someone who’s been even better to me than Mark. He’s been helping me from the shadows all these years. Are you dying to know who he is?”
As she spoke, Charlotte’s gaze shifted, ever so briefly, toward Hawk.
Hawk’s brows furrowed sharply, his expression darkening as he lunged forward and grabbed her by the throat. “Stop playing games! Answer the question!”
While Suzy didn’t notice anything unusual, Charlotte clearly did.
Smiling through the strain, she managed a taunting look at Hawk. “Suzy isn’t in a rush for answers, so why are you? Or is it not urgency… but fear?”
Hawk’s grip tightened around her neck, his fingers pressing down harder. “You can choose to talk or stay silent forever!”
Charlotte gasped, struggling for air as her chest heaved. The lack of oxygen left her choking, but her defiant smile didn’t waver.
She knew better than anyone how ruthless Hawk could be. His loyalty was to Suzy alone, and he wouldn’t hesitate to kill. Their past collaboration meant nothing to him–she held no weight in his eyes.
