She practically spat the words, her voice trembling with hatred.
“You hate me?” Ruby staggered, barely able to keep her footing. “We’re biological sisters. What could I have done to make you hate me so much?”
“Of course, you wouldn’t understand,” Charlotte sneered, her voice dripping with contempt. “You’re nothing but a two–faced hypocrite! Always showing off in front of our parents, making them adore you even more. Even Grandma did the same. She constantly telling me, ‘Your sister is a good child. You should learn from her.‘
“And then there were the neighbors! Even our aunt wanted to keep you, just because you helped around the house. Meanwhile, they complained all I did was eat and take up space. But I was only five years old! You were eight! Why did they always compare me to you?”
She paused to catch her breath, then continued coldly, “You know, when the Frost family came to adopt one of us, they initially wanted you. They thought you were obedient and well–behaved. But I… I tampered with things behind the scenes. That’s why they chose
me!”
Ruby finally snapped, unable to contain her rage any longer. She raised her hand to strike Charlotte. “How could you be so vicious?”
Charlotte caught her hand mid–air, her smile cruel and bloodthirsty. “You think that’s vicious? What if I told you Grandma’s death was my doing? Oh, and our parents too. I deliberately removed the oxygen tanks from their backpacks!”
“It was you!” Ruby felt her blood run cold. She could hardly believe that all her loved ones, one after another, had been taken from her–by the very sister she once tried to protect.
She was just five or six years old at the time. How could a child harbor such wicked thoughts? Those were her family, too! Just because they praised Ruby a little more, she had borne a grudge so deep it led to murder.
“Charlotte,” Ruby choked out, “did you ever realize that their praise for me was only meant to encourage me to take better care of you?”

In families with two children, it was often challenging to maintain complete fairness. There’s a belief that says, “When balance isn’t possible, give more responsibility to the older sibling–they’ll help keep the peace.”
Perhaps that was what their parents had in mind. They praised Ruby not to play favorites, but to ensure she would never view her sister as competition for their love. Yet that well- intentioned approach had only fueled Charlotte’s hatred.
Standing nearby, Suzy listened to the sisters‘ confrontation, finally understanding why Charlotte had been capable of such heinous acts at such a young age.
“It seems some people are just born rotten, and you, Charlotte, are the worst of the worst,” Suzy said coldly. “You always find excuses for your cruelty. You claim your parents favored Ruby, and that made you hate them. But what about my parents? They treated you so well- they gave you everything!”
