The girl’s name was Yara Warran, a thoughtful and hardworking young woman.
Since moving into the Hillside Villa, she had been like a little helper whenever Suzy was home, always bringing her tea or water with a cheerful smile.
Today was no different. The moment Suzy walked in from work, Yara hurried out of the kitchen to greet her. “You’re back! I made lemon butter fish tonight. It’s a recipe my mom taught me. It might not be as good as hers, but I hope you’ll give it a try.”
As she spoke, she took Suzy’s coat and laptop bag with practiced ease.
Despite her young age, Yara was incredibly capable. From cleaning and cooking to playing the piano beautifully, it was clear her parents had raised her well.
Still, Suzy had done her homework. She’d quietly looked into Yara’s background–not out of distrust, but to make sure there weren’t any hidden risks.
The findings had been unremarkable. Yara’s parents had indeed been tragically murdered just a short while ago.
Perhaps it was their shared sense of loss that gave Suzy a special fondness for Yara.
Before Yara’s arrival, Suzy had spent most of her time at the Harlow family estate. But ever since Yara moved in, she hadn’t returned once, afraid the girl might feel unsafe being left alone.
“Come on, dinner’s ready!” Yara called, waving from the dining room with the fish already on the table.
“Coming!”
Before heading to the dining room, Suzy stopped by the bathroom to freshen up.
Suzy had taken a phone call on her way back, so by the time she returned to the dining room, Yara had already prepared a plate of deboned fish for her.
“These pieces don’t have any bones. Eat while it’s still hot,” Yara said warmly, pushing the plate toward her.
Suzy glanced at the plate but didn’t pick up her fork. Instead, she looked up at Yara with a serious expression. “You don’t have to do this.

She stood up quickly, fidgeting with her hands like a child who had been caugh something wrong. “I just wanted to make it easier for you to eat. I didn’t know your wouldn’t like it…”

Suzy sighed, torn between laughing and feeling bad for the girl. “That’s not what I meant. It just wanted to say you’re not a servant here. You’re family. You don’t need to do so much.”
“No, I am your servant!” Yara said hurriedly, shaking her head. “If it weren’t for you, I might have been killed that day. I owe you my life, and I’ll spend the rest of it repaying you however I can!”
“Don’t be ridiculous,” Suzy said, her tone firm but gentle. “What do you mean, ‘spend the rest of your life repaying me‘? All I did was give you a ride home. As for bringing you here…”
She fixed Yara with a steady gaze. “It’s because I was lonely. This place is too big, and without you, it’s just me and a part–time housekeeper. Honestly, I should be thanking you for keeping me company.”
Yara scratched her head, uncertainty flickering in her eyes. “Is that really it?”
“What else?” Suzy stood and gently guided Yara back into her seat. “So, let’s call it even. We’re just helping each other out, okay? You don’t owe me anything. Just stay here and make yourself at home.”
Yara beamed at her, flashing a bright smile, and nodded firmly. “Okay!”
Suzy smiled back and slid the plate of deboned fish toward her. “From now on, don’t bother doing this for me. I’m a grown woman. I think I can handle eating fish on my own. Yara giggled. “My mom couldn’t…”
Her giggles turned into soft sniffles as tears started streaming down her cheeks. “My dad adored my mom. Whenever he was around, she never had to lift a finger. She didn’t even know how to eat fish on her own–he always took out the bones for her…”
Her voice cracked, and without warning, she threw her arms around Suzy, clinging tightly to her. “I miss them so much, Suzy! Who could be so cruel? Why would
anyone do something so horrible to them?”
