The caller didn’t say anything further and hung up abruptly. About half an hour later, Yara knocked on the study door, carrying a small delivery box.
“Suzy, a courier just dropped this off. He said it was for you. I thought it might be
something important, so I brought it up right away.”
Suzy rarely ordered anything, as she wasn’t a fan of online shopping.
That made this package… suspicious.
Realizing what might be inside, she quickly took the box and said, “Thanks. You can head
out now.”
Yara noticed the change in Suzy’s expression and hesitated. “Is something wrong?”
“No, just work documents,” Suzy replied, keeping her voice calm.
Some things were better left unsaid to protect her.
Relieved, Yara nodded and left the room.
After locking the door behind her, Suzy carefully opened the package. Though she had braced herself, her breath still hitched the moment she saw what was inside.
A severed hand.
She didn’t need more than a glance to recognize that it was Charlotte’s hand.
The scar on the back of her aunt’s right hand was unmistakable, a wound she’d gotten years ago while saving Suzy from an attacker.
To ensure Charlotte’s body wouldn’t decompose, Suzy had used a specially formulated preservative during the burial, one that left a distinctive fragrance.
The scent had hit her as soon as she opened the box.
Her stomach churned with rage and disgust. Whoever was behind this clearly had no limits.
As her thoughts raced, there was another knock at the door, followed by Yara’s tearful voice. “Suzy…”
Panicking, Suzy quickly closed the box and took a moment to steady herself before opening the door. “What is it?”
The moment Yara saw her, tears spilled down her cheeks. “I just got a call… they said…”
Her sobbing made it hard to get the words out.
Suzy placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “Take a deep breath. Tell me slowly.”

Yara sniffled, her emotions finally calming a little. “The person on the phone said that if you keep investigating my parents‘ deaths, they’ll send over your aunt’s other hand…”
Her eyes drifted past Suzy toward the package on the desk. “So, the box doesn’t have documents in it. It’s… it’s your aunt’s hand, isn’t it?”
Suzy hadn’t expected the perpetrator to be so brazen.
Her brows furrowed as she placed a hand on Yara’s shoulder. “Don’t worry. I’ll handle this.”
But Yara shook her head, her tears spilling over again. “No! Suzy, you can’t keep looking into this. If you do, you might end up in danger too!”
Her sobbing grew more intense as she clung tightly to Suzy’s hand. “You’ve already done so much for me. I don’t want you to get hurt because of me.
“I’ve already lost my parents. I can’t lose you too. If that happened, I’d truly have no one left.”
Her voice cracked as she cried, clinging to Suzy with the desperation of a frightened child. Suzy gently nodded, her voice soothing. “Okay, I won’t investigate anymore.”
But that was a lie. There was no way Suzy could let this go, especially after what they’d done to her aunt.
No matter what it took, she was determined to find whoever was behind this and make them pay.
However, even working in secret wasn’t enough. The perpetrator caught wind of her efforts and escalated their threats.
This time, they sent her aunt’s other hand and kidnapped Yara.
The message was clear: Suzy was to come alone to save her.
