Late at night, after Diana had fallen asleep, Suzy finally returned to her room. To her surprise, as soon as she opened the door, she found Dylan already inside.
Her expression darkened instantly. “I didn’t realize you had a habit of inviting yourself in, Mr. Wright.”
Ignoring her irritation, Dylan asked, “Is Diana’s condition really that serious?”
Seeing his genuine concern, Suzy’s expression softened slightly, and she replied honestly, “I’ve tried to hypnotize her twice, but it’s made no impact. Her symptoms are only worsening, and she’s retreating deeper into her own world.”
Dylan’s expression grew more grave. “Is there anything I can do?”
Suzy considered it. “If she’s open to it, you could try talking to her. But it has to be at conversation that makes her feel safe, something that helps her feel secure.”

Diana’s condition was rooted in a deep lack of security. As her brother, perhaps Dylan could reach her where no one else could. But whether Diana would even want to see him was another matter; she hadn’t shown any willingness to connect with anyone except Suzy lately.
Dylan nodded. “I’ll find a time to try.‘
With the conversation over, Suzy expected him to leave.
“I’m going to bed,” she said pointedly.
This time, Dylan took the hint. Rising from the sofa, he even offered a polite “Good night” before heading to the door.
Suzy remained silent, ready to lock the door the moment he left. But before she could close it, Dylan’s steps wavered, and he suddenly stumbled against her.

Dylan let out a rough cough, struggling to steady himself.
“Sorry,” he managed, standing upright before attempting to leave again.
Suzy, with her medical instincts, immediately noticed his unusual temperature. He was running a fever–there was no doubt about it. But so, what?
A grown man should go see a doctor if he’s feeling unwell. And while she was a doctor, he was the last person she’d ever consider treating.
With that thought, Suzy shut the door firmly.

His expression darkening, he turned back and knocked twice. When there was no response, his voice took on a commanding edge. “Open the door!”
“What do you want?”

“I’m not feeling well,” he said, deliberately sounding weaker. “I think I might be coming down with something.”
“So?” Suzy’s tone was flat, entirely unbothered, “What does that have to do with me?” “…You’re a doctor, Suzy. Don’t you have any compassion?”
“Sorry, but as it happens, treating colds isn’t my specialty.”

“Dylan took a steadying breath, exasperated. “Fine!”
Inside, Suzy heard his retreating footsteps and allowed herself a brief smirk. But as she turned to head to the bathroom, she hesitated. He had stumbled, after all; maybe he really was sick. For Diana’s sake, she could at least send a servant with some medicine.
Resolving to do just that, she opened the door–only to find Dylan’s smirking face waiting on the other side.
Without a second thought, she tried to shut it again, but he moved faster, wedging himself in the doorway.
“Suzy,” he said, his tone sly, “admit it. No matter how hard you try, you’re not as indifferent to me as you want to believe.”
